Big Bazaar is the first aggregator of supermarket stores in the world to come up with a whopping number of 101 stores in a very short time-span of seven years from its inception. After operational issues and heavy online competition from Amazon and Flipkart, Jabong finally got sold off this year to Flipkart and may be subsequently merged with Flipkart’s fashion brand, Myntra. Irrespective, Jabong and its latest stream of cutting age post modern advertising has ensured it remains one of the most admired brands.

KOOVS India has been incepted as an independent e-commerce fashion portal in 2010, operating through as an online store especially for western fashion, serving products like menswear, womenswear, footwear, accessories, jewellery and beauty products. The website flaunts Indian and international brands.

Crafting their innovative business idea, entrepreneur couple Manoj and Monika Gupta have founded Craftsvilla an online marketplace that allows users to buy and sell ethnic handmade products to discover unique Indian products.

Myntra is another name for fashion in India; incepted in 2007, this Bangalore headquartered online portal was founded by Mukesh Bansal and comes under the Flipkart umbrella. In 2011, Myntra extended its product catalogue to include fashion and lifestyle products. Myntra tied up with various popular brands (350 Indian and International brands) to retail a wide range of latest merchandise from these brands. Myntra is rapidly diversifying into home furnishing, personal care segments and jewellery; year 2016 may see Myntra merging with Jabong.

Shoppers Stop
Shoppers Stop is a one stop shop Indian retailing company owned by K Raheja Group, which started its operations in 1991 with its first store in Andheri, Mumbai. The website sells all the products practically available at Shoppers Stop stores, including apparel, cosmetics and accessories. Keeping pace with technology, the brand has also launched its app in February 2016 as part of their omni-channel strategy. From Biba Apparels, Gini & Jony, Nike, Reebok, Louis Philippe, Pepe, to Arrow, Shoppers Stop also merchandises its own brands such as STOP, Kashish, LIFE, Vettorio Fratini and Acropolis.

Zovi’s central agenda has been to locally craft and manufacture lifestyle apparel and accessory products with quality at reasonable prices. Zovi is positioned as a metaphor for trendy fashion.

Topping the charts of trendy online shopping sites, Zovi provides free shipping and cash on delivery options. Yebhi, previously named and incepted in 2009 as BigShoeBazaar, is an online portal for buying and selling shoes, later expanding with a variety of products ranging from Apparels, Bags, Mobiles, Watches, Books, Laptops, Home furnishing, Fragrances, Cameras, Sunglasses, and others. An unpleasant incident with an insurance provider brought out the entrepreneurial self of Girish Mathrubootham, propelling him to establish Freshdesk in 2010. Freshdesk is the leading provider of cloud-based customer service software. The flagship product allows organizations to support customers through emails, phone, websites, mobile apps, forums and social media. Freshdesk, allows businesses to monitor real time customer responses across a wide spectrum of media vehicles.

Capillary Technologies
Capillary Technologies, a SaaS company is a tech startup founded by IIT Kharagpur alumni duo Krishna Mehra and Aneesh Reddy that has grown with astonishing pace since its inception in 2008. It is primarily a cloud-based customer analytics marketing platform for retailers and consumer businesses. Capillary Technologies was built to utilize mobile technology to facilitate (brick and mortar) retailers interaction with customers online. InTouch is their flagship software, which uses Big Data significantly.

Cabs & Local Travel

Jugnoo is an Indian auto rickshaw aggregation platform. Jugnoo provides on-demand transport and logistics facility across 32 cities in India. It operates through a mobile app available on multiple platforms, which helps connect the user (travelers) with the auto drivers in proximity. The innovative service was established in Chandigarh by Samar Singla and Chinmay Agarwal (Alumni IIT-Delhi) in October, 2014.

It was in late 2010 that Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati started Ola, an Indian online transportation aggregator under ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd. Ola has a fleet of over 200,000 cars across 85 cities in India. Ola was valued at $5 billion last year and has only seen its valuation growing since then. Ola has merged technology and transport together to bring mobility for a billion Indians. Inspired by Uber, Ola has beaten its competition hands down in many Indian cities.

Meru Cabs
Meru Cabs wesfounded by Neeraj Gupta in 2007. Meru Cabs has been a forerunner in taxi aggregators based in Mumbai, India. To its biggest credit, this earlier offline aggregator has used technology to advantage and has become one of the leading online players in its genre. As of now, it provides cab booking facilities through multiple options like calls, website or through their mobile application. Meru even has a Cab Wallet system for payments. Meru has now even integrated their service with Google Now.

Mega Cabs
Mega Cabs has been a pioneer in introducing world-class taxi services in India. It has positioned itself as a safe, comfortable and reliable alternative. Founded in 2001 by Kunal Lalani, Mega Cabs, now has over 3,500 cars across seven cities, and has set an ambitious target of taking its fleet size to 25,000 by 2020. In six years, it plans to pump in Rs 4,000 crore, expand to 40 cities, take its revenue to Rs 6,000 crore and leverage more technology. The company was the first to innovate the aggregated car rental model, later followed by the likes of Ola and Uber.

Naaptol is a leading home shopping company in India available on the virtual platform and sells various products in categories ranging from apparel, electronics, home furnishings, kitchen appliances, furniture and other utility items. Naaptol was started by founder and CEO Manu Agarwal, an IIT Kanpur alumnus in 2008 primarily serving as a product research and price comparison service. Naaptol (Hindi for ‘Bargain’) provides a platform for merchants and sellers to sell their products, which are compared through web analytics, providing invaluable customer support.


Simplilearn – one of the largest professional certifications company – is an online education portal providing professional certification training. Based in Scotts Valley, California, USA, the company was founded by Krishna Kumar in 2009. He posted free video lessons and a practice test there; since then, the site has gained more than 450,000 users from 150 plus countries and is growing by leaps and bounds.

Started in 2011 by Ishan and Mayank Gupta with only a handful of certification courses, EduKart has now evolved into a leading education marketplace, offering students a platform to enroll into more than 2,500 courses in degree, diploma, certificate, entrance coaching and K12 categories. EduKart has enabled students to access global education. It also offers certificate courses in areas of retail, finance, telecom, digital marketing, programming languages, project management, and IT. MeritNation’s apparent central belief is helping the nation reclaim its merit (thus the play of words). One of the leading online tutorial portals in India, MeritNation is segmenting itself for increasing e-literacy in India. Setting up entire virtual schools on their education portal through elaborate live classes, multimedia tutorials, interactive exercises, practice tests and expert help, the brand’s intention is to make schooling easy for students. Vedantu Innovations Pvt. Ltd. founded in 2011 by four IITians, Vamsi Krishna, Pulkit Jain, Saurabh Saxena and Anand Prakash has launched its online tutoring platform in October 2014. The Sanskrit words Veda (knowledge) and Tantu (network) have crafted the company’s name, Vedantu. The start-up operates on a marketplace model for volunteer/ freelance tutors, wherein aspiring students can browse, search or choose to learn from preferred online tutors of their choice. The online platform has rich content of 21,000 hours of live learning available to over 17,000 students.

It is indeed an inspiration when one of the youngest IAS officers leaves his position of authority and reputation and peruses his passion for imparting education. This is the story of Unacademy, an online portal which provides free educational content to civil service aspirants in 2013. The portal provides free educational material to aspiring students through its website and also streams video tutorials updated periodically. More than 2 lakh students study on this portal as subscribers to the channel. The disruptive start up has raised a $500,000 seed round of funding.

Infibeam, founded in 2007 by Vishal Mehta, headquartered in Ahmedabad, India is an internet and e-commerce conglomerate operating in online retailing, e-commerce software and internet services. The company offers cloud based online services in B2C and B2B verticals. Infibeam’s businesses include online retailing through its flagship website ‘’, e-commerce platform software service through ‘’, e-commerce marketplace ‘’ and its own branded e-book reader.

Reliance Digital
Reliance Digital is a consumer durables and Information Technology initiative by Reliance Retail, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries. It is the 2nd largest consumer electronics company in India successfully foraying into the online segment. The first Reliance Digital Store was set up in 2007 at New Delhi. With the launch of premium stores Digital Xpress and Mini stores, the brand plans to scale up its current store count.


Venturing into the large electronics retail market, Tata Group’s Infiniti Retail Ltd has promoted the Cromā premium retail chain for consumer electronics and durables. It is now amongst the largest such stores in its genre, having successful expanded into Croma Kiosks and Croma Zip stores. From Cellphones, Cameras, Laptops, Tablets, Televisions, Music Systems, Home Appliance to other accessories, Cromā has 6000 plus products across 8 categories. Next Retail India Ltd is a subsidiary of Videocon Industries Ltd operating in the consumer electronics space in India. It was founded in 2003 and is now amongst India’s largest electronics retail chains. The brand is continuing its domination in the online space too. PVR Cinemas

Flipkart originally started as an online bookstore founded by IIMA alumni Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in 2007. Flipkart now employs over 33,000 people providing thousands of products from national and international brands to hundreds of thousands of customers. India’s answer to global e-tailing brands, Flipkart’s brand is amongst the most admired and respected in India.

Entrepreneur trio Vikram Chopra, Mehul Agrawal and Vaibhav Aggarwal launched in 2012. It is essentially an online content driven marketplace which does retail and delivery of home products at doorsteps. An innovative e-store initially started with 2000 products and progressively scaled to plethora of over 1 lakh products to choose from. Capturing on a very niche and largely untapped and unorganized sector, the online eyewear portal has galvanized the market with its exceptional growth. The online retailer sells eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses and eyewear accessories with an all India reach including important cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Indiatimes Shopping one of the country’s oldest e-commerce platforms established in early 2000 is a part of India’s leading media house – The Times Group.
