Having an outline means that you have somewhere to write down your arguments, the key pieces of research you want to make sure you have in your essay, and any pertinent quotes. Seeing everything written down will help you to better formulate your argument and lay it out. While an outline is not fixed, it can help to show ways an argument would make more sense.
