SC refers case on entry of women in Sabarimala temple to 7-judge bench

The Supreme Court on Thursday referred the review petitions against its verdict allowing entry of women of all age groups in the Sabarimala temple to a seven-judge bench. The judgement has been delivered by a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. In 2018, the ruling by the bench led by then CJI Dipak Misra allowed women’s entry.

The first wicket and first catch in Test cricket history were taken by England’s Allen Hill on the first morning of the first Test in 1877. Hill bowled Australia’s Nat Thomson for one run to claim Test cricket’s first wicket. Hill then took Test cricket’s first catch off Alfred Shaw’s bowling to dismiss Tom Horan, second dismissal of the match.

Gilchrist, who hit 149(104), revealed that he had kept the squash ball to improve his grip. Sri Lanka had later claimed Gilchrist broke the “spirit and tradition of the game”.

Apple unveils 16-inch MacBook Pro, to start from ₹1.99 lakh in India

Apple launched its new MacBook Pro with a 16-inch Retina display, replacing the older 15-inch model, priced at around ₹1.99 lakh for the base model in India. Apple claimed that the new model delivers up to 80% better performance. The technology giant has replaced its problematic Butterfly keyboard with a new ‘Magic’ keyboard which now again contains the ‘Escape’ button.

Google to enter banking services, offer checking accounts from 2020

Google, in a move into banking services, is set to offer checking accounts to consumers starting next year. Under the project called “Cache”, the technology giant will partner with banks and credit unions to offer the accounts, with the banks handling all financial and compliance activities. Google already offers Google Pay, which has over 67 million monthly users in India.

Bengaluru-based grocery delivery platform BigBasket is reportedly set to acquire Sequoia-backed rival DailyNinja in a $20-25 million cash-and-stock deal. “Talks between both companies have been underway for about six weeks. The contours of the proposed deal are almost finalised,” Entackr quoted its sources. Notably, BigBasket turned into a unicorn, or billion-dollar startup, earlier this year.

Elon Musk-led SpaceX conducted a full duration static fire test of Crew Dragon spacecraft’s launch-escape system. “SpaceX and NASA teams are now reviewing test data…working toward an in-flight demonstration of Crew Dragon’s launch escape capabilities,” the startup tweeted. In April, a Crew Dragon test capsule exploded after the engines had been ignited a few times during routine testing.

The Punjab government has decided to give ₹2,500 per acre relief as compensation to farmers for not burning paddy straw. “Small and marginal farmers cultivating non-basmati paddy and owning land up to five-acre would get ₹2,500 per acre compensation,” an official said. This comes amidst rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR allegedly due to stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana.

Search on for 5 fishermen missing after Cyclone Bulbul

Indian Coast Guard and National Disaster Response Force on Wednesday continued search operations for the five fishermen who went missing after two trawlers carrying them capsized under the impact of Cyclone Bulbul on Saturday, Coast Guard officer said. The two trawlers with nine fishermen capsized off Mousuni island in West Bengal. Bodies of four fishermen were found on Monday.

Letter in B’desh media showing PM thanking CJI for Ayodhya verdict fake: India

India’s High Commission in Bangladesh said that a letter circulated in Bangladeshi media which showed PM Narendra Modi thanking CJI Ranjan Gogoi over the Ayodhya verdict is fake. “It’s intended to mislead people in Bangladesh and create social disharmony. It’s wrong on part of those deliberately circulating…incorrect information to create misunderstanding about India,” the High Commission said.
