Delhi man loses ₹2.5L shopping online after malware sent through text

A Delhi-based businessman buying furniture online lost ₹2.5 lakh after a fraudster impersonating a seller offering an attractive deal on early payment sent malware through a text message on his mobile. The message contained words like ‘Add UPI money’, ‘Successful money transfer’ along with a link. On clicking it, the fraudster gained access to the man’s mobile and bank details.

Supreme Court bans mining along Kaziranga National Park

The Supreme Court has banned all mining activities along the Kaziranga National Park and catchment area of rivers originating in Karbi Anglong Hills in Assam. The apex court has also banned new construction activities on private lands which form part of the nine identified animal corridors. The ban was ordered as per the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC).

VW’s former CEO charged in Germany in diesel emissions fraud

German prosecutors on Monday said they have charged former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn in connection with diesel emissions fraud. The 71-year-old was aware that diesel emissions were being manipulated as early as 2014 but failed to inform authorities and customers, the prosecutors alleged. Volkswagen was caught using illegal engine control software to cheat US pollution tests in 2015.

Ammy Virk trains with Balwinder Singh Sandhu for ”83′

Punjabi singer and actor Ammy Virk has started training with former India cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu for the upcoming film “’83”, a movie based on India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup win. “Spinning times are coming up! Actor Ayushmann Khurrana has said that his father has a more classic sense of style and doesn’t always approve of the actor’s fashion choices. “My father is very fashionable, he has about 200 kurtas,” he added. “So he doesn’t want me to wear golden or droopy bow tie or boots. But innovation is the new generation’s right,” Ayushmann further said.

Vicky to star in film on Mahabharata’s Ashwatthama: Reports

Actor Vicky Kaushal will star in a film based on the mythological character Ashwatthama from the Mahabharata in an upcoming period-war film, as per reports. Shooting for the film, which will be directed by Aditya Dhar, will commence later this year, reports further suggested. Vicky was last seen in Aditya’s directorial debut ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’, which released in January.

Lata Mangeshkar to donate ₹1cr to Pulwama martyrs’ families

Singer Lata Mangeshkar will donate ₹1 crore to the families of the CRPF jawans who were martyred in J&K’s Pulwama terror attack. Her grandson Adinath further announced friends and family of the Mangeshkar family will be donating an additional ₹11 lakh to families of BSF jawans martyred in Kashmir. Adinath said this during the announcement of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards.

Video shows moment spire of Notre Dame Cathedral collapsed in fire

The 300-foot spire of the Paris Notre Dame Cathedral collapsed due to the fire that engulfed the roof of the nearly 850-year-old cathedral on Monday. The spire was made of wood and covered with lead. Around 400 firefighters were deployed to control the flames, and the fire was declared under control almost nine hours after it broke out.

Notre Dame fire under control, cause still not known: France

Fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is “under control but not totally extinguished yet”, France’s junior interior minister Laurent Nunez has said. He added that the incident is being investigated, however, the cause of fire is still not known. Officials had earlier said that the fire could be linked to renovation work being carried out at the site.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress’ General Secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh, took to Twitter to praise a woman helicopter pilot who ferried her around during campaigning in Fatehpur Sikri on Monday. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday informed a court that 36 businessmen, including Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya, have fled from India in recent past. The agency named Mehul Choksi, Sterling Biotech promoters Sandesara brothers, and Lalit Modi among the 36 businessmen. This came as ED opposed the bail plea of AgustaWestland scam accused Sushen Mohan Gupta over flight risk.

NASA finds water is being released from Moon during meteor strikes

NASA scientists have discovered that water is being released from the Moon during meteor showers. Comet debris hit the surface and create a shock wave and for a sufficiently large impactor, this shock wave can breach the soil’s dry upper layer and release water from below, NASA said. The newly identified phenomena, observed by NASA’s LADEE spacecraft, occurred in 2014.

PayU’s Amrish Rau, Cure.fit’s Mukesh Bansal back CRED

Angel investors including PayU India’s former CEO Amrish Rau, Myntra and Cure.fit Co-founder Mukesh Bansal and Indiabulls’ Ajit Mittal and others have backed FreeCharge Co-founder Kunal Shah’s credit card bill payment startup CRED. Rau and Bansal invested ₹1.6 crore and ₹17.73 lakh, while Mittal purchased preference stock, as per filings. The Bengaluru-based startup was announced by Shah in 2018.

140 sanitary pad dispensers to be set up at Mumbai police stations

Mumbai Police has launched project ‘Smart Maitrin’ under which 140 sanitary napkin vending machines would be installed at 93 police stations across the city. “This should be the basic facility at the workplace, as periods are natural and unpredictable,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Niyati Thaker said. One such vending machine has already been installed at the police headquarters.

Ecuador hit by 4 crore cyber attacks since Assange’s arrest

Ecuador said on Monday that it has suffered 4 crore cyber attacks on the webpages of public institutions since stripping WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of political asylum. The attacks “principally came from the US, Brazil, Holland, Germany, Romania, France, Austria and the UK,” it added. Assange was arrested and carried out of Ecuador’s embassy in London last week.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been declared legally single as a Los Angeles court accepted their request for bifurcation, which allows them to keep working on a final settlement agreement for assets and custody, said reports. However, they aren’t officially divorced yet. The former couple, who were together since 2004, married in 2014 and filed for divorce in 2016.

Activist Sukesh C Khajuria has filed a complaint against PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti over one of her tweets, calling it “seditious”. “Wait for BJP to scrap Article 370. It will automatically debar us from fighting elections since Indian constitution won’t be applicable to J&K,” Mufti had tweeted. Khajuria said that her tweet threatens the unity of India.

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral following a fire that engulfed the cathedral on Monday. “Notre Dame is our history, our literature, part of our psyche, the place of all our great events, our epidemics, our wars, our liberations, the epicentre of our lives,” Macron said. The spire and roof of the cathedral have collapsed.

French Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler on Tuesday tweeted that he was deeply moved by the outpouring of messages from people across India in the wake of the fire at Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral. He tweeted, “It’s also in such times that one can gauge the value of friendship. Thank you India!” The fire was extinguished in a major operation.

Reliance Jio applies for in-flight connectivity licence: Report

Reliance Jio Infocomm has approached the telecom department for in-flight connectivity licence that allows service providers to offer connectivity and data services to Indian and foreign airlines, as per a PTI report. Earlier, companies like Bharti Airtel, Hughes Communications India and Tatanet Services were granted the licence after DoT’s December 2018 notification on the same.

Gambler makes ₹8 cr in his first-ever sports bet after Woods’ win

A US man won a $1.2-million (₹8.3 crore) payout for betting that Tiger Woods would win the Masters. James Adducci flew to Las Vegas last Tuesday to make the $85,000 bet, his first-ever sports bet, before flying back home nearly 3,000 km away. Betting company William Hill said Adducci is the recipient of the largest golf payout in its history.

Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam Sinha on Tuesday joined the Samajwadi Party in the presence of MP Dimple Yadav in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. According to reports, she will be contesting against Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh from Lucknow parliamentary constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This comes days after Shatrughan Sinha quit the BJP and joined the Congress party.
