6 dead, 43 injured in bus accident in Maharashtra

As many as six people died and 43 were injured after a bus they were travelling in met with an accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar on Sunday. The incident happened after the bus reportedly veered off the road due to failure of the brakes, and skidded into thorny bushes. The bus was travelling from Shirdi temple to Mahalakshmi temple.

P Chidambaram’s son Karti to fight from TN’s Sivaganga for Congress

Congress party on Sunday released its ninth list of 10 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, announcing former Union Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram will contest from Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga constituency. In 2014, Karti lost the parliamentary polls from the constituency, a stronghold of his father. The seat was won by AIADMK’s PR Senthilnathan.

Fire breaks out in operation theater at AIIMS, fire tenders at spot

A fire broke out at an operation theater in the trauma centre of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Sunday. Four fire tenders have rushed to the spot, while the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The Delhi Fire Department confirmed that no one is stranded after the incident.

Warner smashes 85(53) exactly a year after ball-tampering scandal

SRH opener David Warner on Sunday smashed 85(53) including nine fours and three sixes against Kolkata Knight Riders on his return to IPL after being banned from the 2018 edition. The 32-year-old’s knock came exactly a year after the ball-tampering scandal, which led to him being banned from international and Australian domestic cricket. Warner’s ban will end on March 29.

Rozi Khan, a 25-year-old man who works as a waiter in Pakistan, said he had never heard about ‘Game of Thrones’ series until people began comparing him to actor Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister’s character. Khan’s 135 cm height is also the same as the actor’s. Khan’s pictures were shared widely on social media alongside that of Dinklage.

Congress shares membership form after Sapna denies joining party

After Haryanvi actress-singer Sapna Choudhary denied joining Congress, the party produced proof by sharing the UP Congress membership form that she reportedly filled on Saturday. Sapna was reportedly formally inducted into the party at Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar’s residence. Babbar had also shared a picture of Sapna on his Twitter account to welcome her in the party.

Graeme Smith’s parents among passengers airlifted from cruise ship

Ex-South Africa captain Graeme Smith’s parents were among the passengers airlifted from a cruise ship that had sent out a mayday signal due to “engine problems in bad weather” off the western coast of Norway. Smith thanked the cruise staff and rescue workers, and said that his parents were being assessed. The ship had 1,373 passengers and crew on board.

The hashtag ‘InAWorldWithNoTwitter’ was trending on Twitter on Saturday, days after the micro-blogging site marked 13 years since its launch on March 21, 2006. A user tweeted, “#InAWorldWithNoTwitter We might actually read a newspaper,” while another tweeted, “We’d have no covfefe…But still have Tim Apple.” A tweet also read, “InAWorldWithNoTwitter Tweets belonged to the birds again.”

Who is Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, the next Chief of Indian Navy?

Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, who will succeed Admiral Sunil Lanba as Indian Navy Chief, belongs to Jalandhar and is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Singh, who was commissioned into the Navy in July 1980, is the first helicopter pilot to occupy the Navy Chief office. He has extensive experience in flying HAL Chetak and Kamov Ka-25 helicopters.

Guilty conscience: Swaraj to Pak Minister on abduction of Hindu girls

After Sushma Swaraj tweeted to Indian High Commission in Pakistan asking for report of two Hindu girls being allegedly abducted, Pakistan Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted it was Pakistan’s internal issue. “It’s not Modi’s India where minorities are subjugated…it’s Imran Khan’s Naya Pak,” he added. Swaraj said she had just asked for report and Fawad’s response showed his “guilty conscience”.

Ethiopian Airlines defends its Boeing planes after crash

Ethiopian Airlines has rejected media reports that optional equipment for Boeing 737 MAX planes was critical for safety aboard the flight that crashed. “When Boeing supplies aircraft there are items mandatory for safety and then there are optional items,” CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said. “The angle of attack indicator was on the optional list along with inflight entertainment system,” he added.

The Hinduja family has topped the Asian Rich List 2019 for the sixth successive year with £25.2 billion (over ₹2.3 lakh crore) wealth. Steel magnates Lakshmi Mittal and his son Aditya Mittal were ranked second with £11.2 billion (over ₹1 lakh crore) wealth. Petrochemicals billionaire SP Lohia was ranked third with £5.8 billion (over ₹53,000 crore) wealth.

Honda unveils electric dirt bike and scooter prototypes

Automaker Honda Motor showed its ‘CR Electric’ dirt bike and ‘Benly Electric’ delivery scooter prototypes during the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show earlier this week. The e-dirt bike, which appears to be based on Honda’s CRF dirt bike, features an electric motor developed by Japan’s Mugen. The e-scooter reportedly uses swappable battery packs used in Honda’s PCX Electric maxi scooter.

American drone analytics startup Aria Insights shuts down

US-based drone analytics startup Aria Insights, previously known as CyPhy Works, has abruptly shut down its operations. Confirming the incident the startup told TechCrunch, “Aria Insights has ceased operations effective March 21, 2019”. CyPhy Works was founded in 2008 by MIT alumna and iRobot Co-founder Helen Greiner and has reportedly raised $39 million in disclosed funding till date.

BJP leader Ramlal Gurjar, three others shot at in Rajasthan

BJP leader Ramlal Gurjar and three others were shot at by a group of around three people in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district on Saturday night. The incident happened when Gurjar was returning after attending a function and the accused opened fire and targeted him, police said. “Gurjar and three others received bullet injuries and were admitted to hospital,” police added.

5 Indian sailors return after 14 months in jail in Greece

Five Indian crew members of a cargo ship arrived in Mumbai on Sunday after being jailed for around 14 months in Greece. They were arrested in January 2018 on charges of carrying explosive material. “They were released 15 days after a court ruled that confiscated materials were raw materials for crackers and not banned explosive material,” an official said.

Mossad spy who captured Nazi mastermind Eichmann dies aged 92

Rafi Eitan, a Mossad spy who led the Israeli team that captured Holocaust mastermind Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, has died at the age of 92. Eichmann was taken to Israel where he was tried and found guilty of crimes against humanity and subsequently hanged. Eitan was also involved in planning the attack on the Iraqi Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981.

Indonesia opens first metro to tackle rising traffic congestion

Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated the country’s first mass rapid transit (MRT) system on Sunday with the aim of easing the traffic congestion in the capital Jakarta. Widodo also presided over a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the second phase which is planned for completion by 2024. Passengers can ride for free until the end of the month.

Sridevi honoured posthumously at Filmfare Awards 2019

Late actress Sridevi on Saturday was posthumously honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 64th Annual Filmfare Awards ceremony. The award was received by the late actress’ husband and producer Boney Kapoor as well as her daughters Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Further, the award ceremony also featured a tribute to Sridevi.

Smriti Irani, the BJP’s candidate from Amethi, reacted to Congress party’s claim of calls for Congress President Rahul Gandhi to contest from a seat in the South and said that “Amethi rejected him”. She added that the calls were “staged”. Irani, who contested from Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, lost to Gandhi by over 1 lakh votes.

Two hackers win Tesla Model 3, ₹25 lakh for hacking the car

Hackers Richard Zhu and Amat Cama won a Tesla Model 3 by Elon Musk-led electric carmaker and ₹25 lakh after they successfully hacked the car through its browser at hacking contest ‘Pwn2Own’. They used a JIT, or just-in-time bug, in the browser renderer process to execute code on the car’s firmware. Tesla will release an update to fix the vulnerability.

2 employees die from toxic fumes at waste plant at Delhi restaurant

Two employees working at ‘Pirates of Grill’ restaurant at Delhi’s Rajouri, Rakesh Yadav and Ajay, died on Saturday after inhaling toxic fumes from the kitchen waste plant during cleaning. Rakesh’s son Praveen, who once worked at the restaurant, alleged they weren’t provided any safety gear. “We were given a pair of gloves and an apron to cover face,” he added.

Indian Navy rescues over 192 people in cyclone-hit Mozambique

The Indian Navy has rescued more than 192 people in the Cyclone Idai-hit Mozambique and provided assistance to 1,381 people in medical camps set up by it. India diverted three naval ships to the port city of Beira following a request from the government of Mozambique. India will send another ship loaded with relief materials to Mozambique.

Pak PM orders probe into abduction, conversion of 2 Hindu girls

Pakistan PM Imran Khan has ordered an investigation into the alleged abduction, forced conversion and marriages of two minor Hindu girls in Sindh province, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said. The girls were reportedly abducted from their home on the eve of Holi. The incident has triggered protests by the local Hindu community in Pakistan, seeking action against the perpetrators.
