Will enact law against mob lynching, honour killing: Rajasthan CM
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday said that his government has decided to enact a law to curb incidents of mob lynching and honour killing. Gehlot made the announcement while replying to debate on the state budget in the Vidhan Sabha. Recently, the Uttar Pradesh Law Commission framed draft legislation to deal with mob lynching cases in the state.
UP madrasa vandalised over cattle slaughter rumours: Police
A mob vandalised a madrasa and pulled down its boundary wall following rumours of cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district on Tuesday, police said. Some things dumped outside the madrasa’s gate were also reportedly set ablaze. A case against two persons who are absconding and an FIR against unknown persons for vandalising the madrasa have been registered by police.
Red alert in Kerala after ‘extremely heavy rain’ forecast
The IMD has raised red and orange alerts in various parts of Kerala for four days from July 17. The red warning is issued in Idukki and Malappuram districts for July 18, 19 and 20 and Wayanad and Kannur for July 19. Extremely heavy rains (more than 204 mm in 24 hours) are forecasted in these districts.

A VHP leader and SP leader were shot dead in two separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh. VHP’s Pranav Mishra was killed by unidentified bike-borne assailants and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav (not be confused with SP President) was killed when he was working out at a gym. “Criminals have no fear of police in the state,” SP President Akhilesh Yadav said.

Snapdeal Co-founder and CEO Kunal Bahl claimed the e-commerce platform’s consolidated revenue rose by 73% to ₹925 crore while loss fell 70% year-on-year to ₹186 crore. Over the last two years, Snapdeal’s loss was reduced by 96%, he said. “This makes us the proud exception in Indian e-commerce, where greater growth usually means greater losses,” Bahl added.

India’s biggest convertible bond defaulter misses $172 mn payment
Suzlon Energy, which became India’s biggest convertible bond defaulter in 2012, said it defaulted on a $172-million bond payment due on Tuesday. The wind turbine maker is struggling with a debt of over ₹11,000 crore. Bloomberg had reported that Canada’s Brookfield planned an offer for a majority stake in Suzlon and was talking to the firm’s creditors to restructure loans.
Maharashtra raises aid for martyrs’ kin to ₹1 crore from ₹25 lakh
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved a four-fold increase in the financial assistance given to families of martyred and disabled soldiers hailing from the state. Kin of martyred soldiers will now get ₹1 crore as opposed to the current ₹25 lakh. The government will provide ₹60 lakh to soldiers left 51-100% disabled, instead of the current ₹15 lakh.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation has suspended a Vistara pilot, a pilot and a crew member of Air India and two SpiceJet pilots for violation of safety norms. SpiceJet pilots were suspended for damaging runway lights during landing. Air India pilot and cabin crew member were suspended for fighting after the pilot asked the crew member to wash his tiffin.
15-year-old in Bihar seeks permission to end life; PMO orders probe
A 15-year-old boy from Bihar has written a letter to the President expressing his distress over strained relations between his parents and seeking permission to end his life. The boy wrote that arguments and fights between his parents are also affecting his studies. The PM’s Office alerted Bhagalpur district administration about the two-month-old letter and sought a thorough investigation.
Vistara flight makes emergency landing with just 10 mins of fuel left
A Mumbai-Delhi Vistara flight, with 153 passengers onboard, made an emergency landing in Lucknow after it had just 10 minutes of fuel left on Monday. The plane was supposed to land in Delhi around 5 pm but couldn’t due to poor weather conditions. It landed in Lucknow around 6.30 pm after the pilot declared ‘Mayday’ over critical fuel levels.
Amazon launches ‘JEE Ready’ app, enters edtech space in India
American e-commerce giant Amazon has entered the edtech sector in India with the launch of an IIT-JEE exam preparation app called ‘JEE Ready’. The JEE Ready app is currently in its beta testing phase and available only on Android devices. Can’t force MLAs for trust vote, Speaker to decide on resignations: SC
The Supreme Court has said Karnataka Assembly Speaker is free to decide on the status of the rebel MLAs’ resignations, adding that he cannot be forced to take a decision within a time frame. However, the court stated the rebel MLAs cannot be compelled to participate in proceedings of Assembly, including the July 18 trust vote, till the Speaker decides.
Citizenship given to 1,310 migrants in Rajasthan: MoS Home
MoS for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that 1,310 migrants have been given citizenship in Rajasthan. Rai added that Rajasthan government gave citizenship to 82 migrants, while District Collectors of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Jaipur gave citizenship to 1,113, 7 and 108 respectively. The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslims who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Former South Africa footballer Marc Batchelor was shot dead near his home in Johannesburg. “He was attacked by two men who were driving a motorbike,” a police spokesman Col Lungelo Dlamini said. The 49-year-old, who played for South African teams Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, was shot in his car.
UK gives Tata Motors’ Jaguar $620 million loan guarantee
The UK government has given Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) a $620-million loan guarantee to support the design, manufacture and export of electric cars. Prime Minister Theresa May made the announcement after a round-table meeting with auto-industry representatives.
