More than 100 Indian Chief Executive Officers and several Bollywood stars and political leaders are scheduled to attend the 50th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Switzerland’s Davos. The event will be held from January 21 to 24 next year. The Geneva-based WEF has selected “stakeholders for a cohesive and sustainable world” as the theme of the meeting.

8-yr-old boy forced to urinate in classroom, made to wear garbage bags in US

The parents of an eight-year-old boy have filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging their son wasn’t allowed to use the restroom at school and was forced to urinate in front of the class. He was later given two trash bags to wear over his urine-soaked clothes, which he kept on for the rest of the day.

Microsoft uses AI to detect cervical cancer faster in India

Microsoft and Gurugram-headquartered SRL Diagnostics have created an AI tool to detect cervical cancer. The two companies partnered in September 2018 to ease the load on doctors in India. The AI tool was trained by feeding it thousands of cervical smear images to help it find abnormalities. The classification includes interpretations ranging between normal and pre-cancerous to cancerous stages.

Man set on fire after clash with pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong

A man who confronted a group of pro-democracy protestors was set on fire in Hong Kong’s New Territories region. A person poured flammable liquid on the man and used a lighter to set him on fire. In a video that went viral, the man can be heard shouting expletives at protestors. He is said to be in a critical condition.

2 terrorists killed in J&K encounter, warlike stores recovered

Two terrorists have been killed in an encounter with security forces that began on Sunday in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. Weapons and warlike stores have been recovered, while the operation is still ongoing, Chinar Corps of the Indian Army tweeted. Meanwhile, the identity and affiliation of the terrorists is being ascertained.

JNU students clash with police as VP Naidu attends convocation

The JNU Students’ Union on Monday staged a protest outside the AICTE auditorium where Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu was addressing a convocation ceremony. The students clashed with Delhi Police and broke barricades while protesting against a Draft Hostel Manual. Earlier, JNU’s Vice-Chancellor accused some students of keeping the Associate Dean of Students captive in a classroom for 24 hours.

24-yr-old visiting Gurugram for exam raped by cousin in hotel room

A 24-year-old woman has accused her distant cousin of sexually assaulting her in a hotel room when she was visiting Gurugram in September to write an examination, police said. The accused persuaded the woman to stay with him and later assaulted her. She disclosed the ordeal to her family much later as the exam was scheduled for the next day.

4 guests killed after wall of wedding hall collapses on them in Hyderabad

Four people, including a woman, died after a wall collapsed on the guests during a wedding held at Pearl Garden function hall in Hyderabad on Sunday. At least six others suffered serious injuries, and one of them is reportedly critical. According to police, the hall was newly renovated, and the wedding was the first event after the renovation.

Two trains collide in Hyderabad, at least 10 people injured

DoT opposes merger of Airtel and Tata Tele’s mobile business

Abu Dhabi’s Masdar invests $150 mn in Hero Future Energies Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company Masdar has invested $150 million in Hero Future Energies (HFE). This is the second investment in HFE after International Finance Corporation (IFC) had invested $125 million in 2017. HFE plans to build a 5 gigawatt (GW) portfolio by 2022. Its current portfolio includes 1.3GW of wind and solar power and an additional planned 1.5GW.
