11 die of Encephalitis in Assam, Centre sends team to review cases

As many as 11 people have died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam. Concerning the same, Union Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday sent a central team to review and analyse the Encephalitis situation in the state. Vardhan said that the Centre is “coordinating with the Assam government for the prevention and management of JE”.

1 dead, over 20 injured in road accident in Andhra Pradesh

One person died and more than 20 others were injured after a mini-truck rammed into a minibus near Andhra Pradesh’s Theddupadu village on Sunday. The bus, carrying 24 members of a family, was returning to Guntur from Rayachoti after they attended a marriage function. The accident happened when the mini-truck carrying guavas lost control and rammed into the bus.

Rainwater at Statue of Unity design, not leakage: Officials

Officials claimed that the accumulation of water in the viewing gallery of Gujarat’s ‘Statue of Unity’ was not leakage. The official handle of ‘Statue of Unity’ announced on Twitter, “The rainwater has been blown by high-velocity winds inside the viewing gallery. It’s by design that it has to be kept open for a better view which tourists can enjoy.”

NSCN (I-M) hideouts destroyed, huge ammunition recovered

Assam Rifles along with police destroyed two NSCN (I-M) hideouts, one in Jongrum and another near the Indo-Myanmar border. A heavy cache of arms, including AK series rifle, were also recovered from these hideouts. The operation was part of the ongoing crackdown by the Army and Assam Rifles under Spear Corps on insurgent organisations active in south Arunachal Pradesh.

Stop calling luxury cars ‘sin’ goods, reduce GST: JLR to govt

As per Jaguar Land Rover India, the government should stop classifying luxury cars as ‘sin’ goods and reduce the tax burden on them. “If you classify [luxury vehicles] as sin goods…every five-star hotel should be sin…people going there should be called sinners,” MD Rohit Suri said. He added luxury vehicles’ market size is small due to the high GST rate.

Dialogue only way forward for peace in J&K: Farooq Abdullah

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah said that dialogue with Pakistan and all the stakeholders was the only way forward to herald peace in Jammu and Kashmir. He added, “The beneficiaries of the dialogue will be J&K people, who have been bearing the brunt of the hostilities.” He asserted that Indo-Pak talks would lead to the end of violence in J&K.

TMC leader shot dead in WB, party calls for 12-hour bandh

A TMC leader was shot dead on the railway tracks at Bandel junction in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday, police said. Dilip Ram, who was a railway employee, was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. TMC accused “BJP-backed miscreants” of the murder and called for a 12-hour bandh in Chinsurah.

9.2 million text messages collected with single wiretap in US

For four months in 2018, authorities in Texas, US collected over 9.2 million messages under a single court-authorised wiretap order, TechCrunch reported citing government figures. Targeting 149 individuals, it was reportedly granted by a federal judge as part of a narcotics investigation and became the federal wiretap with the most intercepts in 2018. To date, reportedly no arrests were made.

Canada cartoonist loses job after illustration of Trump goes viral

A Canadian cartoonist lost his job after his depiction of US President Donald Trump and the border crisis went viral. The cartoon by Michael de Adder featured Trump standing by a golf cart, asking “Do you mind if I play through?” while looking at bodies of a father-daughter duo who drowned as they tried to cross the Mexico-US border.

Turkey Prez says money being paid to bury Khashoggi issue: Report

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said “some people” were paying “serious money” to bury the issue of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a report. He reportedly made the comments during the G20 summit in Japan. He also said Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman must uncover the killers of Khashoggi.

10 killed as plane crashes into hangar during takeoff in US

Ten people were killed when a small airplane crashed into a hangar as it was taking off from an airport in Texas, US. The twin-engine Beechcraft BE-350 King Air was destroyed by fire from the crash. The plane had just lifted off the runway when it veered left, dropped its left wing and slammed into the hangar.

Air India Express flight skids off runway in Mangaluru, flyers safe

An Air India Express flight with 183 passengers on board veered off the taxiway after landing and got stuck in the grass at the Mangaluru airport on Sunday. All passengers and crew members on board the Dubai-Mangaluru flight were safe, the airline said. Tailwind and wet runway with inadequate braking action were cited as the reasons behind the incident.

SpiceJet plane overshoots runway at Surat airport, all flyers safe

A SpiceJet aircraft from Bhopal carrying 43 passengers and four crew members on board overshot the runway during landing at the Surat airport on Sunday. However, none of the passengers and the crew were injured in the incident. The pilot reportedly could not apply brakes on time to stop the aircraft due to low-visibility and the aircraft overshot the runway.

30 killed, 7 injured as bus falls into gorge in J&K’s Kishtwar

At least 30 people have been killed and seven others have been injured after a bus fell into a deep gorge in J&K’s Kishtwar on Monday, officials said. The bus, which was reportedly overloaded, fell into the gorge along Keshwan-Thakraiye road. Last month, over 40 people were killed after a bus fell into a 500-foot-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu.

PM Modi, Shah condole deaths in J&K’s Kishtwar accident

PM Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday offered condolences to the families of those killed in a bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar. At least 30 people died and 22 were injured after the bus fell into a deep gorge. Former J&K CMs Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti also offered their condolences to the bereaved families.

Second batch of 4,417 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims start journey

The second batch of 4,417 Amarnath pilgrims left a Jammu base camp in a fleet of 142 vehicles for Pahalgam and Baltal. Escorted by the CRPF, 2,800 pilgrims left the base camp for Pahalgam route, while 1,617 pilgrims for the Baltal route, officials said. The second batch of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims comprised of 3,543 males, 843 females and 31 children.

Summer breaks for all Haryana schools extended till July 7

Due to the prevalent heatwave in Haryana, the state government on Monday announced that summer holidays would be extended up to July 7 for all government and private schools. The schools, which were scheduled to open on July 1, will now open on July 8. IMD, however, has predicted “partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain” in Haryana for today.

SC reopens today after 6 weeks, to hear key cases like Rafale

The Supreme Court reopened on Monday after six-week summer vacation and is expected to deliver verdict soon on several key cases like Rafale review petition, Sabarimala and others. The court is expected to deliver a verdict on whether the RTI act is applicable to the CJI’s office. Besides, it’ll also take up cases including sexual harassment allegations against the CJI.

No bank has the power to employ bouncers for forceful recovery of loans from customers, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur said on Monday. He added that there’s a clear directive of the RBI to appoint recovery agents only after police verification and certain formalities are fulfilled. Lenders can’t persistently bother borrowers at odd hours, he added.

As GST completed two years of implementation on Monday, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in a blog wrote, “Those who argued for a single slab GST must realise that a single slab is possible only in extremely affluent countries without poor people.” “As revenue increases, it’ll allow policymakers to possibly merge 12% and 18% slab into one,” he added.

NS Vishwanathan reappointed as Deputy Governor of RBI for 1 year

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of NS Vishwanathan as Deputy Governor of RBI for a period of one year from July 4, 2019. NS Vishwanathan’s term as Deputy Governor was supposed to end on July 3, 2019. Earlier, RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya resigned citing personal circumstances.

Dino Morea, DJ Aqeel summoned by ED in ₹8,100 crore bank fraud case

Dino Morea and DJ Aqeel have been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Sterling Biotech fraud case as payments to them were made using proceeds of crime. Vadodara-based Sterling Biotech Ltd (SBL)/Sandesara Group and its main promoters allegedly cheated banks to the tune of ₹8,100 crore. Recently, the ED froze the group’s properties worth more than ₹9,000 crore.

A 32-year-old man on Saturday allegedly thrashed his wife with a screwdriver and divorced her with triple talaq over asking for ₹30 to purchase vegetables in Greater Noida. In her complaint, the victim Zainab also claimed that she was subjected to repeated violence by her husband and in-laws. Zainab has been shifted to her parents’ house along with her children.

Protestors storm Hong Kong legislature over China extradition law

Hong Kong protesters stormed the Legislative Council on the anniversary of the city’s 1997 return to Chinese rule on Monday amid anger over laws that would allow extraditions to China. Protesters smashed the Legislative Council’s windows with metal objects. Leader Carrie Lam had suspended the extradition bill on June 15, however, protestors are now demanding that Lam should step down.

Hailstorm buries cars, covers streets with 5-ft-thick ice in Mexico

A hailstorm that struck Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s most populous cities, buried vehicles and covered the streets with up to 5-foot-thick ice. “I’ve never seen such scenes in Guadalajara. Then we ask ourselves if climate change is real. These are never-before-seen natural phenomenons,” said an official. Nearly 200 homes and businesses reported hail damage.

Knives, lighters, chillums & mobiles found during raid in UP jail

At least 47 knives, 21 scissors, 11 pointed rods, 8 cutters, and 20 blades were found among other things during a surprise check at Naini Central Jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Sunday. District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami accompanied by senior police officials also recovered mobiles, Saudi currency (1 Riyal), chillums, lighters and pan masala during the raid.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday moved a resolution in Rajya Sabha to extend President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir by six months, which is ending tomorrow. The Samajwadi Party announced its support for the resolution, while the Congress opposed it. “Do not make excuses like Ramzan and Amarnath Yatra to not hold Assembly polls,” said Congress MP Viplove Thakur.

Emirates launches shortest Airbus A380 flight between Dubai & Muscat

Emirates on Monday launched the shortest Airbus A380 flight between Dubai and Muscat, that lasts for 40 minutes. “The average flight time is only five minutes more than the time taken to clean an Airbus A380 by 42 people,” Emirates said. The new flight broke Emirates’ own record of previously operating the shortest A380 flight between Dubai and Doha.

Iran breaches nuclear stockpile limit set under 2015 deal

Iran has breached the limit of its enriched uranium stockpile set in a 2015 deal with major powers, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has said, according to the ISNA news agency. However, Iran said its steps to decrease its commitments to the deal were “reversible”. The IAEA said its inspectors were verifying whether Iran had accumulated more enriched uranium than allowed.
