4 Swiss accounts of Nirav Modi, his sister frozen on ED’s request

The Switzerland government has frozen four bank accounts belonging to ₹14,000-crore PNB scam accused fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi and his sister Purvi Modi, acting on Enforcement Directorate’s request. The financial assets in the bank accounts are reported to amount over ₹280 crore. The ED had sent the request to the Swiss government nearly four months ago.

Can’t talk if rape threats given to my sisters, deceased mom: Sinha

In a letter addressed to Brahmin groups and Karni Sena, ‘Article 15’ director Anubhav Sinha wrote that a conversation won’t be possible if they keep “threatening to kill him or rape his sisters and deceased mother”. He said he “forgives them for crossing all limits of disagreement and protest”. The outfits claimed the film shows Brahmins in a poor light.

Deepika Padukone has said if she had to play a sports person in a film, it’d be her father, former badminton player Prakash Padukone or any sports legend from that era. “That’s because of what they achieved in the circumstances, within the limited exposure and knowledge versus the kind of funds, facilities and visibility available to athletes today,” she added.

Indian crypto exchange Koinex shuts down 1 year after RBI ban

Indian cryptocurrency exchange Koinex’s Co-founder Rahul Raj has announced the closing of its operations, citing lack of banking support and regulatory uncertainty. The RBI had barred banks from serving cryptocurrency exchanges and firms in April 2018. “We took on immense financial burden to continue trading of digital assets,” the IIT-Kharagpur alumnus stated as the reason behind the shutdown.

IAF jet suffers bird hit, pilot drops practice bombs before landing

An Indian Air Force pilot of Jaguar fighter jet jettisoned small practice bombs and fuel tanks of the aircraft during emergency landing after one of the jet’s engines failed on being hit by a bird. However, the pilot managed to land the plane safely at the Ambala Air Base. The pilot was reportedly going for a training mission.

Woman gangraped by brothers-in-law dies in Agra

A woman who was allegedly gangraped and thrashed by her two brothers-in-law has succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Agra. Prashant Tyagi, Station Officer Khandauli, said the two accused had a dispute with their wives, who are sisters of the deceased, and wanted to teach them a lesson by raping their sister. Both of them have been arrested.

Haryana Cong leader hit by more than 10 bullets outside gym, dies

Haryana Congress leader Vikas Chaudhary was shot dead by unknown men in Faridabad on Thursday, officials said. He was hit by more than ten bullets by the men after he came out of a gym. “He was brought to the hospital in the morning. Doctors tried their best to save him…But we could not save him,” a doctor said.

14-yr-old Assam girl hangs self allegedly over name missing from NRC

A minor girl in Assam’s Darrang committed suicide by hanging herself, with her relatives and members of a students’ organisation linking the incident to the National Register of Citizens. Her relative said she was confident her name will appear in NRC this time and took the extreme step after her father informed her that her name wasn’t on​ the list.

CCTV cameras help avert two rail accidents in Maharashtra

Two railway accidents that could have resulted from minor landslides on the Pune-Mumbai ghat section were averted recently due to timely alerts from CCTV cameras installed along the route, Central Railway senior spokesperson AK Jain has revealed. “Last year, there were 3 major landslide incidents in which we were able to identify the boulders through CCTV,” Jain added.

On his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir as Union Home Minister, Amit Shah visited the family of martyred Anantnag Station House Officer Arshad Ahmed Khan. Khan, who was martyred in a terrorist attack on June 12, is survived by his wife and two young sons. Shah said, “His sacrifice for the security of our nation has saved many lives.”

Noida Police to issue ‘red cards’ to men found harassing women

In order to strengthen its ‘anti-Romeo squads’, Noida Police will issue red cards as warnings to men found harassing women in public by following them or passing comments. While issuing the red cards, the details of the men will be noted by the police. If the same person commits a similar offence again, strict action will be taken against him.

Cabinet approves bill to fine people ₹10,000 for blocking ambulances

The Union Cabinet led by PM Narendra Modi has approved Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill which proposes ₹10,000 fine for anyone seen blocking the way of emergency services such as ambulances on roads. The same amount of penalty would be levied in case of drunk driving. The Bill is yet to be passed in the Parliament.

Hope Pak will crack down on Islamist militants: US State Secretary

US’ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who’s currently on a visit to India, said on Wednesday that he remained hopeful that Pakistan would choose the “right course” in cracking down on Islamist fundamentalists. “They cannot be supporting terror, whether that’s cross-border terror between Afghanistan or Pakistan or whether it’s terror that emanates from Pakistan and comes to (India),” Pompeo added.

39kg cocaine found on Brazil Prez’s plane bound for G-20 summit

Thirty-nine kilograms of cocaine was found by the authorities aboard a Brazil presidential plane bound for the G-20 summit in Japan. A Brazilian airman aboard that aircraft was arrested in Spain when the plane made a stop-over. The plane was reportedly carrying a military delegation protecting Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, while the leader was travelling on a separate plane.

US police name baby found in plastic bag ‘India’, release video

Police in the US state of Georgia have released a video of officers finding an abandoned newborn girl inside a plastic bag and named her ‘Baby India’. The video shows the infant crying as the officers rip open the tied-up bag to rescue her on June 6. The police said they’re following leads and attempting to locate her mother.

Oil rigs, jet, ships among ₹9,800cr assets attached in Sterling case

Four oil rigs in Nigeria, two Panama-registered ships, a Gulfstream business jet and a residential flat in London are among the assets worth nearly ₹9,800 crore of Sandesara Group attached by Enforcement Directorate (ED). The group’s Vadodara-based Sterling Biotech is accused of defrauding banks to the tune of ₹8,100 crore. Its main promoters Nitin Sandesara and Chetan Sandesara are absconding.

Instagram not listening to your private conversations: CEO Mosseri

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has said the Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform neither listens to private conversations nor looks at users’ chats. “Doing so would be super problematic for a lot of different reasons. But I recognize you’re not gonna really believe me,” Mosseri was quoted as saying. He said this when asked about personalised ad targetting.

NCLT approves Dhanuka Labs’ bid to take over Orchid Pharma

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has cleared a resolution plan submitted by Dhanuka Laboratories to acquire cash-strapped drugmaker Orchid Pharma. The lenders will get about ₹1,116 crore, which is lower than Orchid’s liquidation value of ₹1,300 crore. The banks, which lent over ₹3,200 crore to the Chennai-based drugmaker, will be taking a haircut of around 65%.

India’s tariff hike unacceptable: Trump ahead of meeting with PM Modi Ahead of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with PM Narendra Modi in Japan, Trump tweeted he looks forward to speaking with PM Modi about India’s recent tariff hike against US. “For years having put very high Tariffs against the United States, [India] just recently increased the Tariffs even further. This is unacceptable and the Tariffs must be withdrawn,” he wrote.
