DRT orders Nirav Modi to pay ₹7,300 crore to PNB
The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) has ordered Nirav Modi and his companies to pay ₹7,300 crore to Punjab National Bank and others. It has issued a recovery certificate based on which the bank’s recovery officer can proceed to attach Nirav Modi’s properties, if necessary. The diamond merchant is currently lodged in a London prison while he faces extradition to India.

The BCCI has filed a written complaint with the ICC, raising concerns about the security of India players after a plane with anti-India banners flew over the stadium during India-Sri Lanka match on Saturday. “This is completely unacceptable. Govt expects ₹90,000 crore dividend from RBI this fiscal
Economic Affairs Secretary SC Garg has said the government expects ₹90,000 crore as dividend from the RBI this fiscal. The central bank transferred ₹68,000 crore to the government including ₹28,000 crore as interim dividend last fiscal. The Union Budget has pegged dividend or surplus from the RBI, nationalised banks and financial institutions in 2019-20 at ₹1.06 lakh crore.
PNB detects fraud of ₹3,805.15 crore by Bhushan Power & Steel
Punjab National Bank on Saturday said it has detected a fraud of ₹3,805.15 crore by Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd and has reported it to the RBI. PNB added that the steelmaker misappropriated bank funds and manipulated books to raise funds from consortium lender banks. The disclosure comes as PNB is recovering from a ₹14,000-crore fraud by diamantaire Nirav Modi.

Fake currency notes worth ₹85 lakh seized in Surat, 2 held
Fake currency notes with a face value of over ₹85 lakh were seized from an apartment flat in Gujarat’s Surat, police said. The police arrested a man and a woman and another accused managed to flee from the spot. They were making the fake notes using colour scanner and printers and used green tape as security thread, the police added.

Indian Army destroyed an NSCN (IM) hideout in Manipur’s Kekru Naga Village and apprehended an active cadre of the insurgent group. Large quantities of arms and ammunition were recovered in a well-coordinated operation, Army’s Eastern Command said in a tweet. M16 with 125 rounds, one SLR, 26 rounds of AK and other warlike stores were recovered from the spot.

Plane lands by itself without ground systems’ help for 1st time
Germany’s Technical University of Munich researchers used a newly developed system to land a plane without relying on ground systems at all. The system uses both visible-light and infrared cameras on the nose of the plane to recognise and characterise a runway. However, the technology is still experimental and not ready to be distributed.

12 killed in Taliban attack on Afghanistan security compound
At least 12 people, including eight members of the security forces and four civilians, were killed and several others were wounded in an attack in Afghanistan. The Taliban claimed responsibility for detonating the bomb near the National Directorate of Security (NDS) compound in Ghazni. Officials said those injured in the attack have been rushed to hospital.

The decision to raise the gold import duty was taken after assessing the smuggling dimension, Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg has said. This comes after concerns were raised by certain trade associations on a further rise in gold smuggling due to the move. Import duty on gold and other precious metals in the Budget was hiked to 12.5% from 10%.
