20 killed in attack on Afghan vice presidential candidate’s office

At least 20 people were killed and 50 injured in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Sunday in a suicide bombing and gun battle at vice presidential candidate Amrullah Saleh’s office. Saleh, a running mate of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, was slightly injured in the attack. Afghan forces killed three militants who entered Saleh’s office after a suicide bomber blew himself up.

Adani Group to invest ₹5,500 crore in UP over next 5 years

Adani Group will invest ₹5,500 crore over the next five years in the power transmission and food processing sectors in Uttar Pradesh, Chairman Gautam Adani said in Lucknow on Sunday. Work on two power transmission projects has already started, he said. He added that rice and flour mills and a cooking oil refining facility will be set up soon.

Muslim teen claims being set on fire for not chanting Jai Shri Ram

The family of a 17-year-old boy named Khalid, from Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli, has alleged that he was set on fire by some people on refusing to chant ‘Jai Sri Ram’. Chandauli’s SP has however said he has given different statements which were found to be false in investigation and added that an eye witness saw him setting himself on fire.

Doctor faces probe for allegedly prescribing condom for stomach ache

A Jharkhand doctor employed on a contractual basis at the Ghatshila government hospital is facing probe for allegedly prescribing a condom to a woman who complained of stomach pain. The woman was told at a medical shop that the prescribed medicine was a condom. Based on her complaint, a medical team with a psychiatrist is probing the issue.

Congress demands probe into truck hitting Unnao rape survivor’s car

The Congress party has demanded an investigation into a truck hitting Unnao rape survivor’s car, killing three people on Sunday and critically injuring the woman and her lawyer. Uttar Pradesh Congress MLA Aradhana Misra said that the accident occurred under “suspicious circumstances”. The Unnao woman had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar of raping her in 2017.

PM Modi features in Israeli PM’s election campaign banners

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party has displayed election campaign banners featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Netanyahu’s party also displayed banners featuring US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Israel will be holding snap polls on September 17 as lawmakers voted to dissolve parliament after Netanyahu failed to form a coalition government.

Forest cover increased by 16,000 sq km from 2014 to 2019: Javadekar

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar has said that forest cover has increased 8,000 sq km from 2015 to 2017 and between 2014 and 2019 it increased by about 16,000 sq km as seen from satellites. Javadekar added, “Sometimes permission is given to cut trees for development but if one tree is cut, 5-10 are planted.”

6-yr-old dies in MP after friends pump air into him through rectum

A six-year-old boy from Indore, Madhya Pradesh died in hospital on Sunday after his friends allegedly pumped air into him by inserting a compressor into his rectum while playing, police said. The boy’s father, who works in a factory, said two of his friends brought him home. “His stomach was swollen. I immediately took him to the hospital,” he added.

Tesla cars to soon support Netflix, YouTube streaming: Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the company’s cars will soon be able to stream videos from Netflix and YouTube when the car isn’t moving. “When full self-driving is approved by regulators, we will enable video while moving,” he added. Tesla has already unveiled games that drivers can play on the displays in their cars.

West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell took to Twitter to praise ex-India captain MS Dhoni’s “inspirational love for country and partner”. He shared an old video of Dhoni in Army uniform being felicitated by President, writing, “This man is an inspiration on the cricket field. But he is also a patriot and a man that gives to his country beyond duty.”

India’s Davis Cup team set to go to Pakistan in September

An Indian team will travel to Pakistan to compete in a Davis Cup tie for the first time in 55 years. The team will participate in Asia/Oceania Group 1 away tie, which will be held on September 14-15 in Islamabad. “It’s World Cup of tennis and not bilateral series, so there’s no embargo on any front.” AITA Secretary General said.

India’s sole individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra on Sunday said that he is not in favour of India boycotting the 2022 Commonwealth Games. “Boycotts don’t win you influence. They just make you irrelevant and punish other athletes,” he tweeted. He further urged the Indian Olympic Association to work towards getting shooting included as a core sport in CWG programme.

Anil Kumble-led ICC committee to discuss boundary count rule

Anil Kumble-led ICC Cricket Committee will discuss the issues concerning 2019 World Cup final, including the boundary count back rule which decided the winner of the tournament. ICC’s general manager of cricket Geoff Allardice said whether the rule should be different is something the committee will consider at some point. The committee will meet during the first quarter of 2020.

Jayawardene-Sangakkara’s record 624-run stand lasted 10 hours

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara broke the record for the highest-ever partnership in Test history with their 624-run stand against South Africa on July 29, 2006. The partnership started when SL were 14/2 and saw Sangakkara scoring 287(457) and Jayawardene hitting a career-best 374(572). The duo batted for 10-plus hours through 157 overs across three days.

Azam Khan apologises in LS over his remark on BJP MP Rama Devi

Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan on Monday apologised in Lok Sabha for his ‘I feel like looking into your eyes’ remark on BJP MP Rama Devi. Many female Members of Parliament, including Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman and Mimi Chakraborty had sought action against Khan over his remark. Rama Devi had said Khan has no right to stay in Lok Sabha.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa won the trust vote in the state Assembly on Monday. The BJP leader was sworn-in as Chief Minister last week after the Congress-JD(S) coalition government failed the floor test held on July 23. The Congress-JD(S) alliance had received 99 votes against the BJP’s 105 in the floor test.
