Setback for auto major

US auto maker General Motors has recalled 114,000 Tavera SUVs built between 2005 and 2013 and has uncovered “violations of company policy” in matters related to emissions standards and other regulatory specifications. The company has admitted that its engineers manipulated emissions tests to comply with government standards. The government is investigating whether GM had improperly manipulated the weight and engine performance in Tavera during emissions testing and certification. Even as an internal company probe is on to determine the scale and extent of the lapses in its manufacturing standards, the auto major has dismissed 25 of its managers for violations of company policy. The company has said it would make changes to the Tavera model built as far back as 2005 and perform the required engineering validation. However, it gave no timetable for notifying customers and doing the work. The recall is a setback for GMs growth plans in India, particularly if it damages the reputation of the US automaker.
