4G, 5G flaws could be used to intercept calls, Study finds
A paper, co-written by Iowa and Purdue University researchers, describes 4G and 5G network security flaws that let hackers intercept users’ calls and track their phones’ location. The attack exploits a vulnerability in paging protocol, used by carriers to notify phone before a call or text message. Anybody with cellular paging protocol knowledge can perform this attack, a researcher said.

Trump’s message on 5G clear and correct: Huawei Chairman
Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei’s Chairman Guo Ping has said US President Trump’s assertion that the US needs “faster” 5G technology through competition was “clear and correct”. The US does not represent the whole world and Huawei could continue to succeed without it, he added. This comes amid allegations by the US that Huawei has enabled Chinese state espionage.

Mithali Raj backs women’s IPL after World Cup performance
India Women ODI captain Mithali Raj said, “[N]ow is the right time to get in IPL because T20 is also a format that ICC is looking to promote in women’s cricket.” Prior to ODI World Cup, Raj had spoken against the introduction of the tournament. “[With the World Cup] people started to understand what is Indian women’s cricket,” Raj said.

Bumrah becomes 2nd Indian bowler to take 50 T20I wickets
Pacer Jasprit Bumrah became only the second Indian bowler to take 50 T20I wickets after reaching the landmark figure in the first T20I between India and Australia on Sunday. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who last played a T20I for India in 2017, is India’s leading T20I wicket-taker with 52 wickets to his name.

Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, and Spike Lee won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for ‘BlacKkKlansman’ and Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for ‘Green Book’. Meanwhile, John Ottman bagged the Best Film Editing Oscar for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Free Solo’ has been named The Best Documentary (Feature).

Mexican film ‘Roma’ named Best Foreign Language Film at Oscars 2019
Mexican film ‘Roma’, which was shot in Spanish and Mixtec languages, has won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. The film’s director and cinematographer Alfonso Cuarón bagged the Oscar for Best Cinematographer. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ Oscar at the ceremony.

Suspected Dubai-bound plane hijacker shot dead: Bangladesh Army
Bangladesh Army has said the suspect who tried to hijack the Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight en route Dubai from Dhaka got injured after being shot at and died shortly after being arrested on Sunday. “He demanded to speak to our prime minister,” Air Vice-Marshal Mofid said. Bangladesh’s civil aviation chief, Nayeem Hasan, said he seemed to be “psychologically deranged”.

UK PM May considering plan to delay Brexit by 2 months: Reports
UK PM Theresa May is considering a plan under which Britain’s exit from the European Union would be delayed for up to two months, according to reports. Meanwhile, May put off a vote in Parliament on her Brexit deal until as late as March 12 – just 17 days before Britain is due to leave the EU.

Job creation hit 16-month high at 7L in December: EPFO payroll data
Employment generation in the formal sector hit a 16-month high of 7.16 lakh in December 2018, according to the EPFO payroll data. During the period, 2.17 lakh jobs were created in the 18-21 years age group followed by 2.03 lakh in 22-25 years age bracket. Around 72.32 lakh subscribers were added to EPFO social security schemes between September 2017-December 2018.

PM-KISAN scheme won’t help PM Modi retain power: Ashok Gehlot
Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot on Sunday criticised the Centre’s PM-KISAN scheme saying the scheme will not help PM Narendra Modi retain power in the upcoming elections. He added that the scheme is an attempt to woo farmers ahead of the general elections. He further said PM Modi will be exposed if people hear his old speeches.

 

Pak MP meets PM, Sushma, denies country’s hand in Pulwama attack
Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a Hindu parliamentarian from Pakistan, on Sunday met PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister Sushma Swaraj at an event in Delhi. The MP assured the ministers that Pakistan had no involvement in the Pulwama attack. Vankwani was part of a foreign delegation invited to India to attend the Kumbh Mela by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Regina King, Mahershala Ali win Best Supporting Actress, Actor at Oscars
Regina King won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’, while Mahershala Ali won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Green Book’ at the 91st Academy Awards. This is Ali’s second Oscar win, while it was King’s first Oscar nomination. Ali took the award in same category in 2017.

Alfonso Cuarón wins Oscar for Best Director for ‘Roma’
Alfonso Cuarón has won the Oscar for Best Director at the 91st Academy Awards for ‘Roma’. This is the second time Cuarón has taken the award, after winning in 2014 for his space drama ‘Gravity’. Cuarón also acted as Cinematographer and Writer on Roma, and the film is based on memories of his own childhood in 1970s Mexico City.

Lady Gaga wins her first ever Oscar for song ‘Shallow’
Lady Gaga won Oscar for Best Original Song at 91st Academy Awards today for her song ‘Shallow’ from ‘A Star is Born’, claiming her first ever Oscar win. “I’ve worked hard for…long time, and…it’s not about winning. But what it’s about is not giving up. If you’ve a dream, fight for it,” Lady Gaga said after receiving the award.

Black Panther first Marvel Studios film ever to win an Oscar
Superhero movie ‘Black Panther’ has become the first ever Marvel Studios film to win an Oscar. The film achieved the feat after Ruth Carter bagged Oscar for Best Costume Design at the 91st Academy Awards today. Carter became the first black woman to win Best Costume Design Oscar. The film also went on to win Oscar for ‘Best Production Design’.

Rami Malek was named Best Actor in a Leading Role for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, while Olivia Colman won Best Actress Oscar for ‘The Favourite’ at the 91st Academy Awards today. Meanwhile, Mahershala Ali won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for ‘Green Book’, while Regina King won Best Supporting Actress for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’.

India-based film on menstruation wins Best Short Documentary Oscar
India-based ‘Period. End of Sentence.’ has won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 91st Academy Awards. The film was directed by 25-year-old Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi and co-produced by Guneet Monga, who is known for producing films like ‘Masaan’ and ‘The Lunchbox’. Set in a village outside Delhi, the documentary talks about the stigma of menstruation.

‘Green Book’ named Best Picture at Oscars 2019
‘Green Book’ won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards. The film bagged a total of three Oscars, including Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor which was won by Mahershala Ali. Directed by Peter Farrelly, the movie is about the relationship between a jazz artist and his driver. Meanwhile, ‘Roma’ won Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Incidents of terrorism less now than before 2014: Sitharaman
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said that the government’s efforts to thwart several attacks had resulted in far lesser incidents of terrorism than prior to 2014. Talking about the Pulwama attack, she added that anger over the matter is well registered. She further said that there was not even a whisper of corruption from 2014 to 2019.

UN praises Odisha govt for proposing 33% women’s reservation
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women has praised Odisha government for proposing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and Assemblies. In a letter to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, it said that such an initiative will renew the dialogue at the national level. Andhra Pradesh had also passed a proposal for women’s reservation in 2016.

4 dead in Andhra after mistakenly consuming toxic liquid
At least four people were killed and several others were hospitalised in Andhra Pradesh after consuming a toxic liquid that they mistook as alcohol. They were all scrap vendors who found a plastic can containing the liquid in a dump yard, police said. The death toll may rise, as condition of the remaining is said to be critical, police added.

YouTuber Lilly Singh reveals she’s bisexual, says it’s her superpower
Indo-Canadian YouTube personality Lilly Singh, also known as Superwoman, took to Twitter to reveal she is bisexual. “Throughout my life [being female, coloured, bisexual] have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I’m fully embracing them as my superpowers,” she tweeted. The 30-year-old was ranked 10th on Forbes list of world’s highest paid YouTube stars in 2017.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ wins most Oscars at 91st Academy Awards
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which was nominated for five Oscars at the 91st Academy Awards, went on to win more awards than any other film at the award show. The biographical film, which is about British rock band Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury, bagged Oscars for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Actor.

Do right thing in 2020 polls: Spike Lee takes dig at Trump at Oscars
In an apparent dig at US President Donald Trump, ‘BlacKkKlansman’ director Spike Lee said, “The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilise…Let’s choose love over hate, let’s do the right thing.” He said this while accepting the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘BlacKkKlansman’. This is Lee’s first Oscar ever.

Give peace a chance: Pak PM after PM Modi’s ‘son of Pathan’ remark
Pakistan PM Imran Khan on Sunday asked PM Narendra Modi to “give peace a chance”. Khan said he “stands by” his words and will “immediately act” if India provides “actionable intelligence” on the Pulwama attack. This comes after PM Modi said that Khan had told him that “he is son of a Pathan and will stand by his words”.

Retired engineer kills NRI daughter with iron rod, commits suicide
David Masih, a retired Junior Engineer of Powercom, allegedly killed his Non-Resident Indian (NRI) daughter Niloufar with iron rod and later committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Amritsar on Sunday. Niloufar had come to meet her parents a few days back. Masih was suffering from depression, his family members said.

IIT Bombay student arrested for filming men, women bathing
A 34-year-old man pursuing higher education from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay was on Saturday arrested for allegedly filming people bathing, police said. He was arrested after a woman found a mobile phone on the bathroom window while she was bathing. The man’s mobile phone had clips of men and women bathing.

US, N Korea could agree to end Korean War at Vietnam summit: Reports
South Korea has reportedly said the US and North Korea could agree to declare the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War in a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam. The two leaders will meet in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi on Wednesday and Thursday, eight months after their 1st summit in Singapore.

B’desh plane ‘hijacker’ had issues with wife, wanted to speak to PM
Bangladeshi officials have said that the suspect who tried to hijack the Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight en route to Dubai from Dhaka had a personal issue with his wife and told the pilot he wanted to speak to Bangladesh’s PM Sheikh Hasina. Officials added that he was shot after he refused to surrender when they tried to arrest him.

When narrated Chhapaak to Deepika, we both teared up: Meghna
Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar, who will be directing Deepika Padukone’s upcoming film ‘Chhapaak’, has revealed, “When I met her [Deepika] for the first time for the narration, we both had teared up.” The actress had earlier called the film “a story of trauma and triumph”. Deepika, who will be seen portraying acid attack victim Laxmi, will also be co-producing the film.

Priya Ramani granted bail in MJ Akbar defamation case
A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to journalist Priya Ramani in a defamation case filed by former Union Minister MJ Akbar. “The truth is my defence,” Ramani said after being granted bail. Ramani had accused Akbar of sexual harassment in the wake of the #MeToo movement, following which Akbar filed a criminal defamation case against her.

SC rejects plea seeking probe of ‘conspiracy’ in J&K attack
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking a probe by a retired top court judge into the Jammu and Kashmir terror attack. The plea filed by lawyer Vineet Dhanda sought probe into the alleged larger conspiracy in the attack. The PIL submitted that nearly 350 kg of RDX was used and it required a thorough probe.
