US seeks info on Pakistan’s misuse of F-16 jet against India

The US is seeking more information on the potential misuse of American-made F-16 fighter jets by Pakistan against India in violation of the end-user agreement, its State Department said on Saturday. India on Thursday displayed parts of a fired AMRAAM missile which can only be fired from an F-16 aircraft, after Pakistan denied using F-16 jets while violating Indian airspace.

SpaceX launches 1st unmanned test capsule to space station

SpaceX has successfully launched its first unmanned Crew Dragon capsule through its Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a test dummy nicknamed ‘Ripley’ to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission is part of NASA’s $6.8-billion bet on SpaceX and Boeing to launch astronauts to the ISS. NASA currently pays around $80 million per seat to Russia for the same.

India, Pakistan restore Samjhauta Express service

India and Pakistan have agreed to restore the Samjhauta Express train service, with the train set to leave from Delhi on March 3, a senior Indian Railways official said. The train will start to run on the Pakistani side on Monday on its return journey. India had cancelled the train service after Pakistan cancelled it from its side.

Jet fuel price hiked by 8.1%, still costs less than petrol, diesel

State-owned fuel retailers on Friday hiked the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by 8.15% to its costliest level this year. The first hike in four months comes amid a spike in international crude oil prices. In Delhi, jet fuel costs ₹62,795.12 per kilolitre or ₹62.79 per litre, while petrol and diesel cost ₹71.81 and ₹67.12 per litre respectively.

New York-headquartered co-working startup WeWork has fired around 300 employees, 3% of its global workforce as part of its routine process of laying off ‘underperformers’. WeWork, most recently valued at around $47 billion, has raised over $8 billion in venture capital funding since it was founded. The startup said it plans to hire around 6,000 employees in 2019.

NASA InSight lander starts digging on Mars, drills 35 cm

German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) ‘Mole’ device has started digging the surface of Mars and has reached an estimated depth of around 35 centimetres, NASA revealed. ‘Mole’ landed around 4,000 hammer blows over a period of four hours in its first sequence. Sent to Mars aboard NASA’s InSight lander, ‘Mole’ will deploy 14 temperature sensors to measure Mars’ internal temperature distribution.

Body of soldier recovered 11 days after Himachal avalanche

Army rescue team on Saturday recovered the body of one of the five soldiers who had been missing since February 20 after an avalanche in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district. The Army men dug through 20 feet of snow to recover the body, officials said. About 500 personnel have been deployed to search for the other four trapped soldiers, officials added.

4,000 youths facing action by anti-Romeo squad in UP: Irani

Addressing a programme at Agra College, Union Minister Smriti Irani said that around 4,000 youths accused of harassing girls and women are facing action by Uttar Pradesh’s anti-Romeo squad. Anti-Romeo squad was launched in 2017 by UP government to protect women from sexual harassment in public places. Further, Irani praised the PM Narendra Modi-led Centre for its initiatives for women.

Properties linked to Jamaat-e-Islami leaders sealed in J&K

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have sealed several properties belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir including residences of some of its activists, police said on Saturday. The police official added that bank accounts of JeI leaders have also been frozen. This comes days after Centre banned the outfit under section 3 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Class 12 student dies while writing an exam in Telangana

A Class 12 student died while appearing for his annual examination in Telangana’s Secunderabad on Saturday, officials said. The 16-year-old boy, a student of a government junior college in Yellareddyguda, collapsed at the examination centre and died before he could be taken to the hospital. It is suspected that the boy died of cardiac arrest.

India’s air strikes damaged pine trees: Pak to file complaint at UN

Pakistan Climate Change Minister Malik Amin Aslam on Friday said the country plans to lodge a complaint against India at the United Nations (UN), accusing it of “eco-terrorism”. He said that Indian fighter jets bombed a “forest reserve” bringing down dozens of pine trees. “What happened over there (Balakot) is environmental terrorism. There has been serious environmental damage,” Aslam added.

Pakistan violated ceasefire in the Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district at around 12:30 pm on Saturday. The Indian Army responded appropriately to the Pakistani firing. On Friday, a 24-year-old woman and her two children were killed as Pakistani forces heavily shelled areas along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Mumbai airport receives threat call, some areas evacuated

Mumbai airport’s Terminal 2 received a threat call on Saturday following which some areas of Level 2, 3 and 4 were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The threat call was received at around 11 am and was later classified as “non-specific”. Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) at the airport was convened to assess the threat call.

24-yr-old woman, her 2 kids killed in Pak shelling along LoC in J&K

A 24-year-old woman, her 5-year-old son and 9-month-old daughter were killed and two others were injured as Pakistani forces heavily shelled areas along the Line of Control in J&K’s Poonch district on Friday, officials said. Pakistani forces targeted civilian areas with mortar bombs and heavy guns, including Howitzer 105 mm, the officials added, stating that the Indian forces retaliated effectively.

Release prisoners of 1971 war, Amarinder Singh tells Pakistan

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday urged Pakistan to admit to and release the Prisoners of War (POW) still in its captivity from the 1971 war. He urged India to take up the issue with Pakistan. Fifty-four Indian soldiers, officers and pilots, who were detained in the 1965 and 1971 wars, are believed to be held by Pakistan.

Navy, Army teams recalled from Meghalaya mine rescue operation

Teams of the Indian Navy and Army left the East Jaintia Hills district on Friday after searching for the 15 miners trapped in a rat-hole mine in Meghalaya since December 13, an official said. SBI reports frauds worth 7,951 crore in April-December of FY19

State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender by assets, has said it had reported frauds totalling ₹7,951 crore during first nine months of 2018-19. Fraudulent activity had been mainly in some large-value accounts, it added. SBI said all those accounts were classified as non-performing assets “much earlier”, with most of the portfolio already fully provisioned for.

Cong, BSP, Shiv Sena get notice for illegal banners in Maharashtra

The Bombay High Court on Friday issued show cause notices to the Congress, BSP and Shiv Sena, asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for putting up illegal hoardings and banners across Maharashtra. The court added that if the parties fail to take appropriate action on the matter, it will issue notices to their leaders.
