Voting begins in 9 states for 4th phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections

Voting in nine states in the fourth phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections began on Monday. Polling is being held at five seats in Bihar, 17 in Maharashtra, 13 in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, and six in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. Eight seats are going for polls in West Bengal, three in Jharkhand and one in Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP MP Babul Supriyo’s car vandalised outside poll booth in Asansol

BJP MP Babul Supriyo’s car was vandalised outside a polling station in West Bengal’s Asansol on Monday. The incident took place at polling booth number 199 where Supriyo was heading amid reports of lack of central forces at the booth. Clashes also took place between Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and security personnel at the polling booth.

Priyanka Chopra, Rekha among celebs who cast their votes in Mumbai

Actress Priyanka Chopra, Rekha, actor Paresh Rawal and filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj were among the Bollywood celebrities who cast their votes in the fourth phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai on Monday morning. Others who cast their votes included actors Rahul Bose and Madhuri Dixit. Congress candidate from Mumbai North and actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar was also spotted.

Rohit Sharma knocks off bails in anger after getting out, penalized

MI captain Rohit Sharma knocked off the bails at non-striker’s end with his bat in anger after getting LBW out against KKR on Sunday. The 31-year-old opted for DRS, however, the decision was upheld as replays showed ball would’ve clipped the leg-stump. Rohit, who also said something to the umpire while walking back, was fined 15% of his match fee.

15,600-yr-old human footprint oldest in the Americas: Researchers

A 15,600-year old footprint discovered in Chile is believed to be the oldest ever found in the Americas, researchers said. First discovered in 2010, scientists worked to rule out the possibility of it belonging to some other animal species and to determine its age. A palaeontologist said it’s the first evidence of humans in the Americas older than 12,000 years.

Female US pilot who lost legs during Iraq war, returns as Senator

Tammy Duckworth, the helicopter pilot who lost her legs when she was shot down over Iraq 15 years ago, returned to the country for the first time last week as a US Senator. “I returned in a role I never expected,” she said. Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring from military service in 2014 .

Sri Lanka bans face coverings after serial blasts that killed 250

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said he is using emergency powers to ban any form of face covering in public over the serial bomb blasts that killed over 250 people. “The ban is to ensure national security. No one should obscure their faces to make identification difficult,” he added. The restriction will take effect from Monday.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tej Pratap Yadav on Sunday alleged that Surendra Yadav, RJD’s candidate from Bihar’s Jehanabad, is an “agent of RSS”. Campaigning for independent candidate Chandra Prakash, Tej added, “Due to my father’s imprisonment, wrong people were given ticket in RJD.” Tej further alleged that Surendra is an arms dealer and a man of dirty thinking.

Arsenal suffer their 3rd straight loss in Premier League

Leicester City defeated Arsenal 3-0 on Sunday to hand them their third consecutive defeat in Premier League. Arsenal, who played with 10 men after midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off in the 36th minute, are currently placed two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea on the Premier League points table. Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy scored twice in the match.

Valtteri Bottas beats Hamilton to win Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas beat his English teammate Lewis Hamilton by 1.5 seconds to win Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. With this, Mercedes became the first team to win the opening four races of an F1 season with one-two finishes. Bottas is on top of the season’s drivers’ standing with 87 points while Hamilton is second with 86 points.

Gaming phone with cooling fan, 8K video recording unveiled

Chinese smartphone company Nubia Technology has unveiled its new gaming smartphone dubbed ‘Nubia Red Magic 3’ that has a built-in cooling fan and can record videos in 8K. Equipped with a 48MP rear camera and 16MP front camera, the phone has slow-motion recording capability at 1,920 fps. Further, the phone has a 6.65-inch AMOLED screen.

Walmart concept store in NY has AI cams, interactive walls

Walmart has unveiled its 50,000 square-foot AI-powered concept store, the ‘Intelligent Retail Lab’ in New York, which features AI-enabled cameras and interactive walls. The store’s cameras and real-time analytics monitor inventory levels and automatically trigger alerts to internal apps to remind employees to restock products. Walmart claims the cameras and sensors pump out 1.6TB of data a second.

After TikTok, Helo removes 50 lakh posts violating guideline

ByteDance-owned social media app Helo, which focuses on Indian language users, has removed around 1.6 lakh accounts and 50 lakh posts on its platform over 10 months for violating its guidelines. This comes after ByteDance-owned lip-syncing app TikTok said it removed over 60 lakh videos that violated Community Guidelines in India since July 2018. Helo app supports 14 Indian languages.

UP criminals now say ‘arrest us, don’t do encounter’: Shah

BJP President Amit Shah on Sunday said that after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath came to power, criminals are seen moving with a placard saying ‘arrest us, but don’t do encounter’. He added that criminals roamed freely when SP and BSP ruled the state. Yogi had earlier claimed that 73 criminals were killed in encounters since he became CM.

Nearly 20% of pharma items sold in India counterfeit: USTR

Almost 20% of all pharmaceutical goods sold in the Indian market are counterfeit, a report by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said. It further ranked India among top producers for exporting counterfeit drugs to countries including Africa, Canada and the US. A senior official at India’s Health Ministry has, however, rejected the findings and claimed the figures are “exaggerated”.

Pilots demand better training to rebuild trust in 737 MAX Pilots of American Airlines, one of the biggest operators of Boeing 737 MAX, have demanded simulator training rather than a computer-based explanation for the aircraft. Computer training “won’t provide confidence for pilots to feel…comfortable flying the aircraft [and relay] that confidence to the [flyers],” they said. 737 MAX is currently preparing for regulatory approval of a software update.
