Mekathoti Sucharitha appointed as Andhra Pradesh Home Minister

Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday appointed Mekathoti Sucharitha as the new Home Minister of the state. She is the first woman home minister in the remaining state of Andhra Pradesh formed after Telangana was carved out in 2014. Sucharitha represents Prathipadu (SC) reserved constituency in Guntur district.

1 in every 10 men in Nepal gets married underage: UNICEF

In Nepal, one in every 10 men aged between 20 and 24 was married as a child, UNICEF said in its report. Nepal has been ranked 10th in the world’s top 10 countries where child marriage is rampant among boys. It’s the only country in South Asia with a significant prevalence of child marriage among both boys and girls.

Trump scraps tariffs on Mexico after it agrees to curb immigration

US President Donald Trump has indefinitely suspended planned tariffs against Mexico after it agreed to curb immigration through its border to the US. “Mexico will try very hard, and if they do that, this will be a very successful agreement,” Trump said. Trump had announced to impose 5% tariffs on all Mexican goods, threatening to increase them up to 25%.

Bangladesh man held for plotting attack on New York’s Times Square

Ashiqul Alam, a 22-year-old Bangladeshi citizen who is a green card holder, has been arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on New York’s Times Square. Alam discussed his attack plans for nearly a year with an undercover federal investigator. He was arrested after trying to buy two semi-automatic pistols with defaced serial numbers from an undercover officer.

Once a cricketer, Ashleigh wins French Open women’s singles title

World number eight Ashleigh Barty defeated 19-year-old Czech Markéta Vondroušová in straight sets to win French Open and her first Grand Slam title on Saturday. The 23-year-old Australian, who played as a cricketer in women’s Big Bash League in 2015 and 2016, won with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-3. Both the players were playing their maiden Grand Slam final.

Thiem beats Djokovic to set up French Open final with Nadal

World number four Dominic Thiem beat world number one Novak Djokovic in five sets to reach his second straight French Open final. The 25-year-old Austrian won with a scoreline of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in four hours and 13 minutes across two days due to inclement weather. He will now face defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final tomorrow.

Arsenal footballer Mesut Özil tied the knot with former Miss Turkey Amine Gülşe on Friday, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as his best man. Özil and Gülşe started dating in 2017 and got engaged in 2018. The 30-year-old footballer, who has Turkish heritage, quit Germany national team after 2018 World cup over “disrespect and racism”.

Three Indian-origin techies have featured in Forbes list of America’s 80 richest self-made women. Ranked 18th with $1.4 billion net worth, Jayshree Ullal is CEO of computer networking firm Arista Networks, and Neerja Sethi, ranked 23rd with $1 billion net worth, cofounded IT consulting firm Syntel. Neha Narkhede has been ranked 60th with a net worth of $360 million.

NASA Administrator responds after Trump says Moon is part of Mars

Hours after US President Donald Trump tweeted that Moon is a part of Mars, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine responded to him on Twitter. “As @POTUS (Trump) said, NASA is using Moon to send humans to Mars!” tweeted Jim. “Curiosity and NASA’s InSight are on Mars and will soon be joined by the Mars 2020 rover and Mars helicopter,” Jim added.

Magnetism discovered in Earth’s mantle, reveal researchers

An international team of researchers demonstrated that a form of iron oxide, hematite, can retain its magnetic properties deep down in Earth’s mantle, up to a temperature of around 925°C. The temperature is comparable to relatively cold tectonic plates, mainly beneath the western Pacific Ocean. Earth’s mantle isn’t nearly as “magnetically dead” as has so far been assumed, researchers said.

Man pays ₹2 lakh, drives off with SUV worth ₹18.6 lakh from showroom

A man in January paid ₹2 lakh as down payment for an SUV costing ₹18.6 lakh at a Bengaluru showroom and drove away with the vehicle. After paying ₹2 lakh, he requested the manager to take the car out to perform a ritual and never returned. “He isn’t answering calls and is not found in the office,” the manager said.

SL intel chief fired after he says Prez was warned about attack

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has fired the country’s chief of national intelligence Sisira Mendis after he testified that Sirisena was warned about a possible attack before the Easter Sunday blasts. Mendis had also said that the security council meetings were held irregularly. Sri Lanka had previously admitted they had intelligence reports on the attack threats but failed to respond.

US campaign against Huawei may lead to real wars: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said that US tactics such as a campaign against China’s Huawei will lead to trade wars and possibly real wars. The US is attempting to “impose its jurisdiction across the entire world,” Putin added. Huawei, which US considers a security threat, has signed a deal with MTS to develop a 5G network in Russia.

Delhi court allows Kochhar’s brother-in-law to leave India

A Delhi court has directed the authorities concerned to withdraw the lookout circular against Rajiv Kochhar, brother-in-law of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, in an alleged bank loan fraud and money laundering case. He was allowed to return to Singapore, where he is currently based. Rajiv should furnish fresh itinerary and give his address in Singapore and contact numbers.

Belgian forward Eden Hazard penned a farewell letter and posted on Instagram after leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid on Saturday. “It’s no secret that it was my dream to play for them since I was a young boy just scoring my first goal,” Hazard wrote. “Leaving Chelsea is the biggest and toughest decision in my career to date,” Hazard added.

Real Madrid sign Chelsea’s Eden Hazard on five-year deal

Spanish club Real Madrid have signed Belgian international Eden Hazard from English side Chelsea on a five-year-long contract. Hazard, who arrived at Chelsea from French club LOSC Lille in 2012, leaves Chelsea after winning six major trophies in seven years. Hazard is Real Madrid’s second signing this summer after signing Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic.

PM Modi arrives in Maldives on first foreign visit of second term

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in the Maldives on his first overseas visit after assuming the office for a second term. He will hold talks with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. On Friday, PM thanked Solih for inviting him and tweeted, “India views the Maldives as a valued partner with whom we share deep bonds of history and culture.”

Bhutan’s lower house of parliament decriminalises homosexuality

Bhutan’s lower house of parliament has voted to scrap laws that criminalise homosexual relations. However, the upper house of Bhutan’s parliament still needs to repeal the penal code for homosexuality to be decriminalised in the country. Last month, Taiwan became the first Asian territory to legalise same-sex marriage.

PM Modi gives bat signed by Team India to Maldives President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih a cricket bat signed by Team India playing at the ICC World Cup 2019. Among other requests presented by the Maldives, India has agreed to help construct a cricket stadium in the island nation. BCCI officials had visited Maldives in May in order to help the game grow.
