Uber posts over $1 billion Q3 loss as revenue rises 30% from 2018
Uber has posted a net loss of over $1 billion for the quarter ending September, up 18% from the same quarter last year. The ride-hailing giant’s quarterly revenue rose to $3.8 billion, up 30% year-over-year from $2.9 billion in 2018. Notably, the company had posted a record loss of over $5 billion for the second quarter of 2019.
Freshworks raises $150 million from Google, Sequoia, Accel: Report
Software unicorn Freshworks, which provides businesses with customer engagement solutions, has reportedly raised $150 million in a funding round from existing investors including Google, Sequoia and Accel. The billion-dollar startup has now reportedly hit a valuation of $3.5 billion. Founded by Girish Mathrubootham and Shan Krishnasamy in 2010, Freshworks had become a unicorn in July 2018.
Sister of dead ISIS chief Baghdadi captured during raid by Turkey
Turkey has captured Rasmiya Awad, the sister of dead ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a raid on Monday in the Syrian town of Azaz, a senior Turkish official told Reuters. “We hope to gather a trove of intelligence from Baghdadi’s sister on the inner workings of ISIS,” the official added. The 65-year-old’s husband and daughter-in-law are also being interrogated.
Sahitya Akademi publishes anthology on 200 yrs of Indian English poetry
India’s National Academy of Letters, Sahitya Akademi has published an anthology called ‘Modern English Poetry by Younger Indians’ to mark 200 years of Indian English poetry. Edited by poet Sudeep Sen, the book contains pieces of poetry by poets aged 40 or less. Poet Abhay Kumar said that the anthology will broaden the reach of Indian English poetry.
Indiabulls Real Estate divests entire stake in Century for ₹1,830 cr
Indiabulls Real Estate (IBREL) has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary has divested its entire stake in Century for about ₹1,830 crore to Clivedale Overseas, an entity owned by IBREL promoters. The sale encompasses the Hanover Square property in London which is indirectly owned by Century. The divestment comes under IBREL’s plans to focus on its India business and cutting debt.
HDFC Q2 net profit rises by over 76% at ₹10,749 crore
HDFC has reported a consolidated net profit worth over ₹10,748 crore, up by 76.3%, in the second quarter ended September 30. Its standalone net profit rose by 60.6% to ₹3,961 crore from ₹2,467 crore in the year-ago period. HDFC’s consolidated net profit during the corresponding three months of 2018-19 stood at over ₹6,096 crore.
UP man takes challenge to eat 50 eggs for ₹2,000, dies after having 41st
A 42-year-old Uttar Pradesh man died after eating 41 eggs after a friend challenged him to eat 50 eggs for ₹2,000 after an argument, police said on Monday. He ate 41 eggs and just when he started eating the 42nd egg, he collapsed and fell unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital but died hours later from overeating, doctors said.

3-yr-old riding on bike with father dies after neck slit by ‘manja’
A three-year-old boy bled to death after a ‘manja’ thread floating in the air slit his throat when he was riding with his father on a bike in Chennai on Sunday. The thread, usually used to fly kites, floated down from a lamppost and tangled itself around his neck. He was rushed to hospital but died due to grievous injuries.

Billionaire stock market investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala on Monday bought Yes Bank shares worth ₹87 crore, according to data from stock exchanges. TN college asks students to use ink pen to lessen plastic output

Researchers find fossilised remains of 150-mn-yr-old pliosaur
A pair of researchers with the Polish Academy of Sciences has excavated the fossilised remains of a 150-million-year-old sea creature known as a pliosaur. The researchers claim that they found the fossil, which was approximately 10 metres long, in a cornfield in a northeastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains near the village of Krzyżanowice.
N Korea, US could resume talks in mid-November: S Korean MP
North Korea and the US could hold another round of working-level talks by mid-November, a member of South Korea’s parliament said on Monday. Working-level nuclear talks in Sweden between officials from North Korea and the US broke off on October 5. North Korea’s chief negotiator Kim Myong Gil had said US negotiators wouldn’t “give up their old viewpoint and attitude”.
Maryam Nawaz granted bail in a money laundering case
A Pakistani court on Monday granted bail to Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif, in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case of money laundering. Maryam had filed her bail application in the case on “merits and humanitarian grounds”, claiming she wanted to look after her ailing father. “The court has granted Maryam bail on merit,” an official said.
Pirates kidnap 4 crew members from Greek boat off Togo in West Africa
Pirates attacked a Greek oil tanker off the coast of Togo on Monday and fled after taking four crew members as hostages, the Togolese Navy said. Of the missing crew members, two are Filipinos, one is Greek and one is Georgian. In a separate incident, nine people from a Norwegian boat off Benin’s coast were abducted by pirates on Saturday.
Burger King India looks to raise ₹400 crore in IPO
Burger King India filed draft papers for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) to raise up to ₹400 crore. Everstone Capital, which operates Burger King India, is considering a private placement of shares worth ₹150 crore ahead of the IPO. The issue includes an offer for sale of up to 60 million equity shares by QSR Asia PTE.
Saudi Aramco value in bank research varies by over $1 tn: Report Fund managers, who have reportedly seen banks’ research, said Saudi Aramco’s valuation may vary by over $1 trillion. Company officials reportedly held meetings with investors to achieve around a $2-trillion valuation. Aramco plans to list 1-2% stake on the Saudi stock exchange to raise around $20-$40 billion.
