Goa CM Manohar Parrikar passes away aged 63 after prolonged illness

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away aged 63 on Sunday, a year after being diagnosed with a pancreatic ailment. He had been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February 2018. Parrikar had first become Goa CM in 2000 and had also served as Defence Minister of India from 2014 to 2017.

Centre announces one-day national mourning over Parrikar’s demise

Centre has announced national mourning on Monday (March 18) following the demise of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. National Flag will fly at half-mast in the national capital and capitals of States and Union Territories, the government announced. Further, there will be a meeting of Union Cabinet at 10 am on Monday.

Manohar Parrikar’s last rites to be held at 5 pm in Panaji

The last rites of Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, who passed away on Sunday at 63 after battle with cancer, will be conducted on Monday at 5 pm at Panaji’s Miramar in Goa. The Centre has announced national mourning and a state funeral for Parrikar. In the aftermath of his death, schools and other educational institutes in Goa will remain closed.

He added that Parrikar “bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year”. He further said, “My condolences to his family in this time of grief.”

Late Goa CM Parrikar had left riding scooter fearing accident

Late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, while talking to BJP workers in 2018, revealed he had left riding or sitting on scooters. “My mind’s filled with work-related thoughts and if I ride scooter while my mind is somewhere else…I could meet with an accident,” he had said. He passed away today aged 63 after a battle with cancer.

DMK MP Kanimozhi will contest polls from Tuticorin constituency in southern Tamil Nadu, while former Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja will contest from Central Chennai and Nilgiris, respectively. Earlier, DMK had announced that it will contest on 20 seats in Tamil Nadu.

IKEA makes 3D printed furniture parts for differently abled

Swedish furniture maker IKEA’s Israel arm has collaborated with non-profit organisations to make a series of 3D printed furniture pieces that make it easier to use for the differently abled. Named ‘ThisAbles’, it includes 13 items like easier-to-grab door handles and bumpers to protect cabinets. They can be downloaded from the project’s website and 3D printed anywhere globally, IKEA said.

RBI not in favour of changing IDBI Bank’s name: Reports

The IDBI Bank’s proposal for changing its name has found no favour with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as per reports. The board of IDBI Bank had proposed to change the lender’s name to either LIC IDBI Bank or LIC Bank. This comes after LIC acquired a 51% stake in the bank on January 21, becoming its majority shareholder.

Germany’s Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank confirm merger talks

Two of Germany’s largest lenders, Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, on Sunday confirmed they have begun government-backed discussions on a potential merger. The banks have been unable to restore their revenue growth after deep cuts to their investment banking units. Deutsche Bank, in which the German government holds over 15%, said the talks are part of a review of “strategic options”.

RBI allows HDFC to hold only 9.9% in Bandhan Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has prohibited India’s largest mortgage lender HDFC from owning more than the regulatory limit in Bandhan Bank. HDFC, which will merge its low-cost arm Gruh Finance with Bandhan Bank, can hold 9.9% in the bank, the maximum a non-banking finance company can own in a private bank. HDFC had sought approval to hold 14.96%.
