BJP leader shot dead by terrorists at his home in J&K’s Anantnag

BJP leader Gul Muhammad Mir was on Saturday shot dead by terrorists at his home in Verinag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Gul was Anantnag district Vice President of the BJP, according to reports. Doctors at District Hospital Anantnag said that the 60-year-old had received five bullets, three in the chest and two in abdomen.

Akshay’s eligibility for National Award questioned over citizenship

Several social media users, including National Award-winning film editor-writer Apurva Asrani, questioned Akshay Kumar’s eligibility for India’s National Awards, as the actor is a Canadian citizen. Akshay had won the National Award for Best Actor in 2016. Following this, director Rahul Dholakia clarified while sharing a screenshot of the rulebook that foreign nationals can get National Awards.

Karni Sena asks Akhtar to apologise over ‘ban ghoonghat’ remark

Karni Sena had asked lyricist Javed Akhtar to apologise within three days for saying that if burqa is banned, then the practice of covering face with ‘ghoonghat’ should also be stopped. “We’ll gouge out your eyes and pull out your tongue if you don’t apologise. We’ll enter your house and beat you,” said the president of Karni Sena Maharashtra wing.

Teachers threaten misbehaving students with ‘Endgame’ spoilers

Social media users have posted pictures of teachers threatening students with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ spoilers to ensure good behaviour in class. One photo showed a teacher writing letter-by-letter a sentence spoiling part of the movie. Another picture showed the teacher wrote a sentence featuring the name “Thanos” followed by blank lines, threatening to fill them in when the class got loud.

Man who slapped Kejriwal was dissatisfied AAP supporter: Police

The man who slapped Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal during a roadshow on Saturday was an AAP supporter who was dissatisfied with the behaviour of the party leaders, Delhi Police said. Police added that the 33-year-old man used to work as an organiser of the party’s rallies and meetings. AAP dismissed the claims and said the attacker was a BJP supporter.

RCB beat SRH as Hetmyer, Gurkeerat register record 144-run stand

RCB defeated SRH by four wickets on Saturday to finish their IPL 2019 campaign with five victories in 14 matches. The match witnessed RCB batsmen Shimron Hetmyer and Gurkeerat Singh Mann share a partnership of 144 runs, the highest-ever fourth-wicket stand in IPL. Virat Kohli became the second batsman after MS Dhoni to score 4,000 runs as captain in IPL.

Hetmyer smashes ball into partner Gurkeerat, his bat flies away

Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Shimron Hetmyer attempted to smash a delivery by SunRisers Hyderabad leg-spinner Rashid Khan straight down the ground but ended up hitting his partner Gurkeerat Singh’s bat. Gurkeerat’s bat went flying for some distance before landing on ground at extra cover. Hetmyer and Gurkeerat went on to register 144 runs for the fourth wicket, an IPL record.

SpaceX sends live cells to ISS to study space travel effects

Billionaire Elon Musk’s aerospace startup SpaceX has launched microchips embedded with living human cells that mimic human organs, called ‘organs-on-chips’, to help scientists study how space travel affects humans. It includes chips modelling kidneys, bone and cartilage, the blood-brain barrier and the lungs. Human immune system chips had been delivered to ISS previously in December 2018.

Newly married teen couple found dead in WB university campus

A newly married teenager couple was found dead in the Visva-Bharati University campus in West Bengal on Friday night. Their bodies were found near the Department of Chinese Language & Culture. The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Somnath Mahato and 19-year-old Abantika, police officials said, adding that it appears to be a case of suicide.

Iran jails President Rouhani’s brother for corruption

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s brother, Hossein Fereydoun, has been sentenced to an unspecified jail term for corruption. Fereydoun’s name was mentioned in a scandal revolving around the inflated salaries employees of Iran’s state insurance company, among other cases. Fereydoun, a close aide of the President, will be able to appeal the verdict.

UK nurse denied Guinness World Record for ‘not wearing skirt’

A nurse was denied a London Marathon Guinness World Record because she ran wearing scrubs with trousers and not a skirt. Jessica Anderson, who works at the Royal London Hospital, wanted to be the quickest woman to complete the race dressed as a nurse. She beat the current record of three hours, eight minutes and 54 seconds by 32 seconds.

Man freed after wrongly serving 30yrs in jail faces new rape charge

A US man who spent 30 years in jail after being wrongly convicted of rape is facing a new rape charge. Freed in 2016, George Perrot has been accused of raping a woman in January. The 50-year-old, who is being held without bail until his case is heard, has pleaded not guilty to all charges in relation to the incident.

N Korea tests rocket launchers, tactical guided weapons

North Korea has conducted a “strike drill” for multiple launchers, firing tactical guided weapons in a military drill supervised by leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday. This comes after the country fired several unidentified short-range missiles into the sea. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Kim realises his country’s “great economic potential” and “will do nothing to interfere or end it”.

1-yr-old girl, pregnant mother killed in Israel air strike on Gaza

A pregnant Palestinian woman and her over 1-year-old daughter have been killed by an Israeli air strike, as cross-border violence continues near Gaza. Palestinian militants fired over 400 rockets into Israel on Saturday on the second day of fighting. Israel responded with dozens of retaliatory air strikes and tank shelling on at least 30 different militant targets.

Sri Lanka’s new WC jerseys made out of recycled ocean plastic

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has released the team’s new jersey for the upcoming World Cup 2019. The jerseys have been made from recycled ocean plastic and waste plastic recovered from the beaches of Sri Lanka. “Through this initiative, MAS & SLC intend to promote the responsible consumption of plastic to save marine species and their habitats,” SLC’s tweet read.

Bengaluru startup LoanMeet fails to raise funds, shuts down

Bengaluru-based lending startup LoanMeet has shut down after failing to raise capital since its undisclosed seed round in 2017. Backed by Bengaluru-based lending startup KrazyBee’s CEO Madhusudan E, who confirmed the development to Entrackr, LoanMeet had reportedly been winding up operations for the past two months. It also reportedly fired around 15 workers in the past few months.

Family of Australia woman shot dead by US policeman gets ₹138 crore

The family of an Australian woman, who was shot dead by a police officer in 2017, has been promised $20 million (over ₹138 crore) in compensation by US’ Minneapolis. This comes just days after the officer was convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Out of the $20 million, $2 million will be donated to an anti-gun violence group.

Fan chases Vaani Kapoor on bike in Mumbai, actress files complaint

Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor, who appeared in films like ‘Befikre’ and ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, has filed a police complaint against a fan who chased her on his bike from Versova to Bandra and back. Identified as Sameer Khan, the fan wanted to have a word with the actress. The fan refused to stop chasing even when her car’s driver accelerated.

Indian diplomats locked inside Gurdwara in Pakistan: Reports

Two Indian diplomats were locked in a room by the Pakistani intelligence in a Gurdwara in Pakistan’s Farooqabad last month while they were on a work trip to facilitate the travel of Indian Sikh pilgrims, reports said. India reportedly issued a demarche to Pakistan to protest against the incident. Indian diplomats were also harassed at the same Gurdwara last year.

Cyclone Fani kills 12 people, destroys 2,000 homes in Bangladesh

At least 12 people have been killed and 63 others have been reportedly injured in eight districts across Bangladesh as Cyclone Fani hit the country on Saturday. Around 36 villages in Bangladesh have been flooded due to the cyclonic storm. The cyclone has destroyed more than 2,000 homes in Bangladesh.

31-year-old ex-Miss Uruguay found hanging in Mexico hotel bathroom

Fatimih Dávila Sosa, the 31-year-old model who became Miss Uruguay in 2006 and represented her country in Miss Universe contest, was found hanging in a Mexico hotel’s bathroom. Investigators are probing whether her death was a suicide or if she was killed. Mexico City’s district attorney’s office said Dávila arrived in Mexico on April 23 for a supposed job interview.

India may attend G7 meet in August on France’s invitation

India may be attending the G7 meet organised by France in Biarritz in August along with Australia, Chile and South Africa. The group consists of US, UK, France, Italy, Canada, Japan and Germany. “I would like to confirm that India is officially invited to the August (G7) summit and for the preparatory meetings,” French ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler said.

The International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said that he has sympathy for Caster Semenya but respects the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision about Semenya’s testosterone levels. Semenya, who won gold in the 800 metres at the last two Olympics, will have to artificially reduce her levels of testosterone hormone to defend her titles at the Tokyo Olympics.

Explosives found buried in mosque backyard in Sri Lanka

Three locally-made bombs and 100 grams of ammonia were found buried in the backyard of a mosque in Sri Lanka’s Welipenna on Friday, police said. A 42-year-old suspect was arrested over the recovery of explosives. Authorities in Sri Lanka have been conducting search operations after the Easter Sunday blasts, claimed by the Islamic State, killed 257 people.

After ban on Masood Azhar, India asks UN to adopt anti-terror treaty

India has sought the adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) at the UN. CCIT aims to arrive at a universal definition of terrorism, ban all terror groups and make cross-border terrorism an extraditable offence, among others. India’s call comes after Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar was designated as a global terrorist at the United Nations Security Council.

Lamborghinis, Ferraris among 120 cars seized during race in Germany

Police in Germany seized over 120 sports cars thought to be part of a suspected road race across Europe. Cars including Porsches, Lamborghinis and Ferraris were stopped on Thursday down a stretch of motorway near the city of Wismar. German authorities are investigating whether the event which costs €799 (nearly ₹62,000) to enter, was an illegal race.

Thai King’s crown is topped with large diamond from Kolkata

Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn was on Saturday presented with five royal instruments, including the Great Crown of Victory, which is topped by a large diamond from Kolkata. Adorned with diamonds set in gold enamel, the crown is 66 cm tall and weighs 7.3 kg. The coronation ceremony, held inside Bangkok’s Grand Palace, is a mix of Buddhist and Hindu traditions.
