The Supreme Court today dismissed the plea of ex-BSF constable Tej Bahadur Yadav against the rejection of his nomination from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency as an SP candidate. “We don’t find any merit to entertain this petition,” a bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi dismissing the plea said. The Election Commission had rejected his papers citing discrepancies.

13 Indians rescued from burning ship carrying 120 vehicles in UAE
As many as 13 Indians onboard a burning cargo ship were rescued on Wednesday by a team of firefighters at Khalid Port in UAE. The vessel was loaded with 6,000 gallons of diesel, 120 exported vehicles and 300 vehicle tyres, all of which were gutted in the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

7 Maoists killed in encounters in Odisha, Chhattisgarh
At least seven Maoists were killed in two separate encounters in Koraput district of Odisha and Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday. In Koraput, one of the five Maoists killed was reportedly Swaroopa. Swaroopa was a key accused in the double murder of sitting Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma in Andhra Pradesh in September 2018.
Billionaire Shanghvi to keep Suzlon stake despite falling value
Sun Pharma’s billionaire Founder Dilip Shanghvi, who bought a 23% stake in Suzlon for ₹1,800 crore in 2015, said he intends to stay invested in the unprofitable wind-turbine maker. Shanghvi said policy hurdles were responsible for lower demand for Suzlon’s wind turbines. The company’s market value plunged to ₹3,300 crore on Wednesday from ₹10,900 crore when Shanghvi invested.

Mumbai-London Air India flight diverted, delayed by 24 hours
A Mumbai-London Air India flight was diverted to Vienna due to a technical snag in its engine, following which it was delayed by over 24 hours at the Vienna airport. The flight, which was carrying over 300 passengers, reached London on Wednesday. “A technical team was sent to Vienna to rectify the glitch,” the airline said.
Engineer gets ₹33 refund for cancelled Railway ticket after 2 years
Sujeet Swami, a 30-year-old Kota-based engineer, received ₹33 as a refund from the Indian Railways on a cancelled ticket after a two-year-long case. The Railways had charged him the amount as service tax despite him cancelling the ticket prior to the implementation of GST. The ticket was booked in April 2017 for July 2, a day after GST was implemented.

The commission declared the voting held at these polling stations void based on reports submitted by the chief electoral officer, special observer and the returning officer. The re-polling is scheduled for May 12.

Mumbai-bound flight from Paris makes emergency landing in Iran
A plane flown by a subsidiary of Air France heading from Paris to Mumbai has made an emergency landing in central Iran. The Airbus A340 flown by the low-cost carrier Joon landed in the city of Isfahan on Wednesday. Joon said in a statement the plane, operating as flight number AF218, landed out of precaution over a malfunctioning ventilation circuit.
Facebook may pick London as WhatsApp Pay base amid India test
Facebook plans to use London to drive the global expansion of WhatsApp’s mobile payments service, a company spokesperson confirmed. WhatsApp dispatched engineers to Britain late last year to recruit about 100 people in London and Dublin to support its payments initiative, the spokesperson added. Facebook started its test for the service in India over a year ago.

Alibaba-backed Chinese AI startup Megvii, commonly known for its facial recognition brand Face++, has raised $750 million in its latest funding round. The funding raises Megvii’s valuation to over $4 billion as it prepares for its IPO in Hong Kong planned for later this year, Reuters reported. Bank of China Group Investment reportedly led the funding round with $200 million.

RoC prepares report on Jet’s books to check fund diversion
The Registrar of Companies (RoC) has submitted the inspection report of cash-strapped Jet Airways’ books to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). The inspection was initiated under the Ministry’s instruction to ascertain if there was any diversion of funds. Jet, which has a debt of over ₹8,000 crore, temporarily suspended its operations on April 17 due to lack of funds.
IndiGo in process of seeking approvals to fly to China
Budget carrier IndiGo on Wednesday said it is in the process of securing necessary approvals for entering China. “With our existing fleet and the arrival of new A321 Neos, we… [can] serve China, Middle East and Southeast Asia,” the Gurugram-based airline said. IndiGo has reportedly already received approval to fly to China’s Chengdu and Guangzhou.
Abraaj Founder yet to pay ₹136 crore bail, stays in UK jail
A London court on Wednesday allowed private-equity firm Abraaj’s Founder Arif Naqvi two more days to raise £15-million (₹136 crore) bail. Naqvi, who was granted bail last week, is still in jail as he hasn’t paid the security bond. Naqvi was arrested in Britain last month and is awaiting potential extradition to US where he faces charges of defrauding investors.

The Supreme Court has said it may give ownership rights of all 15 residential properties of cash-strapped Amrapali Group to Noida and Greater Noida authorities. It said the authorities can then engage any builder to finish the stalled projects. “We may throw you out from these properties and transfer it lock, stock and barrel,” the court added.

Missing piece of Britain’s iconic Stonehenge returned after 60 yrs
A piece of stone drilled from Britain’s Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument of standing stones, has been returned to the site 60 years after being removed during archaeological excavations. The 1.08-metre-long cylindrical stone was taken by worker Robert Phillips in 1958, who took it to the US when he emigrated. On the eve of his 90th birthday, he returned it.
