Cricketer-turned-BJP leader Gautam Gambhir has sent a defamation notice to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and AAP’s East Delhi candidate Atishi after they accused him of distributing “casteist and derogatory” pamphlets against Atishi. The legal notice demands that the noticees apologise and withdraw their statements or face legal action. The pamphlets had called her a “prostitute”.

Delhi Metro services to start at 4 am on polling day
Delhi Metro services will begin from 4 am, two hours earlier than regular timings, on May 12 so that staff deployed for election duty can avail the facility for travelling, officials said. The trains will run at 30-minute intervals till 6 am. However, trains going from Dwarka Sector 21 towards Vaishali will begin operations from 4.30 am.

Odisha gets notice over relief supply not reaching Fani-hit areas
The NHRC has sent a notice to Odisha government after taking suo motu cognizance of a media report claiming that relief material is not reaching some Cyclone Fani-hit areas. There seems to be a necessity to identify areas which require immediate relief and rehabilitation, NHRC stated. The panel has asked the Chief Secretary to submit his response within six weeks.

A video showing a beluga whale returning a phone to a woman who accidentally dropped it in the water at Norway’s Hammerfest Harbour has gone viral. The whale is thought to be the same mammal that was suspected to be Russian spy. The clip shows the whale holding the mobile in its mouth and bringing it back to the surface.

RCom board suspended, resolution professional takes over management
A bankruptcy court has suspended Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications’ (RCom) board and appointed a new interim resolution professional to run the company’s operations. The National Company Law Tribunal allowed a consortium of 31 banks, led by SBI, to form a committee of creditors. As per the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the resolution process has to be completed within 270 days.

MIT system tracks health from bounced-back radio signals
MIT scientists have developed a movement-tracking system ‘Marko’ based on wireless radio-frequency signals, which collects health and behaviour data after the signals bounce off a human. The system is trained using sensors worn by users for a few days. In one test case, researchers used Marko to analyse a patient with dementia and found they became agitated after family visits.

Google is launching 53 updated, ambiguously gendered emojis as part of a beta release for Pixel smartphones this week and Android Q later this year, Fast Company said. “We’re not calling this…gender neutral. Gender neutral is what you call pants,” creative director for Google emoji Jennifer Daniel said. “It is an impossible task to communicate gender in…single image,” Daniel added.

Only one-third of world’s longest rivers flow freely: Study
A study, led by Canada’s McGill University’s Günther Grill, analysing 246 global rivers which are 1,000 kilometres or longer has revealed just around one-third, or 90 of them are still free-flowing. Such fragmentation of the world’s major rivers, caused mainly by dams, threatens the ecosystem services that both people and wildlife depend on for survival, the researchers said.
163-mn-year-old fossils reveal new bat-wing dinosaur species
Fossils found in China, dating back to about 163 million years ago, have led to the discovery of a new species of a small dinosaur with bat-like feathered wings. The dinosaur, Ambopteryx longibrachium, is only the second feathered dinosaur found with signs of large membranes on its wings, researchers said. The fossil was found in 2017 by a local farmer.
10 killed, 13 injured as jeep rams into tree in Punjab
As many as 10 people were killed and 13 others were injured after a jeep they were travelling in rammed into a tree on Thursday in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur. The victims were returning from a shrine in Himachal Pradesh. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has announced an ex gratia of ₹1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
MCA may refer Jet Airways to SFIO for fund diversion probe
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), based on a report from Registrar of Companies (RoC), is reportedly examining alleged fund diversion in Jet Airways’ books. The RoC has found violations of Companies Act and some unexplained funds trail in Jet’s books, reports said. The report could be referred to Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to probe fraud allegations, reports added.
Taiwan looking to improve ties with India, says top official
Taiwan will strengthen its ties with India’s new government, the representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India, Chung Kwang Tien, said. “Our relations are pretty good. One of our projects [is] to promote visits of high-ranking officials,” he said. Tien’s statements come amidst China’s claim that Taiwan does not qualify for formal diplomatic ties with any country.
