3 imprisoned for life, 3 others get 5-yr jail in Kathua rape case

A Pathankot court has sentenced three out of the six convicted for rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua last year to life imprisonment. Three others have been handed a 5-year sentence each. Earlier in the day, the special court acquitted one of the seven accused, Vishal Ram, in the case.

Hrithik’s sister denies report of ill health, says ‘I am partying’

Hrithik Roshan’s sister Sunaina Roshan took to Twitter on Monday to deny reports which said her health condition is critical and she has been kept under observation. “Surprised to read about me being critical in hospital…I am out with friends and partying! Please get your facts right,” she wrote. The report said Sunaina has been suffering from bipolar disorder.

BJP calls for 12-hour bandh in WB as police stops from taking bodies

BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal to be observed on Monday after the police stopped BJP leaders from taking the dead bodies of workers to party office. Three BJP workers and a TMC member were killed in clashes in the state on Saturday. BJP also said it will move the court over the role of police.

Dmitry Rogozin, the Head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, said that he would not hire space startup SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk to get help with reusable rocketry. On being asked about inviting Musk to Russia, Rogozin said, “He’s a busy man, I’m a busy man, why should I invite him?” In the past, Rogozin accused SpaceX of “killing competitors.”

Boy turns 2 in 150-ft borewell as efforts to rescue him enter 5th day

The boy who fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell in Punjab’s Sangrur district on Thursday, turned two today, as operation to rescue him entered fifth day. Fatehveer Singh is stuck at a depth of about 125 feet, and his face is covered with a jute bag because of which rescuers aren’t able to provide food to him, however, oxygen is supplied.

Indian-American threatens man with gun, causes stampede at parade

An Indian-American has been arrested in the US for threatening a person with an air gun and causing a stampede during an LGBTQ pride parade. Aftabjit Singh, 38, pulled out the gun after a man allegedly threatened his “significant other”, police said. Singh has been charged with illegal possession of a gun, carrying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.

Ex-ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar skips ED questioning over ill health

Former ICICI Bank CEO and Managing Director Chanda Kochhar on Monday skipped questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) citing poor health. Last month, she and her husband Deepak Kochhar were questioned five days straight by the ED. The case relates to practices in the sanctioning of a ₹1,875-crore loan by ICICI Bank to the Videocon Group between 2009 and 2011.

No cancer-causing formaldehyde found in baby shampoo retest: J&J

Johnson & Johnson on Monday said the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation laboratories retested the company’s baby shampoo and reaffirmed the absence of cancer-causing compound formaldehyde in the product. In March, the Rajasthan Drugs Control Organisation had reported the presence of formaldehyde in samples of two batches of the shampoo. The company had rejected and challenged the finding.

Portugal beat the Netherlands to win maiden Nations League title

Portugal defeated the Netherlands 1-0 on Sunday to claim the maiden UEFA Nations League title. Gonçalo Guedes, the 22-year-old Valencia winger, scored the match-winning goal for Portugal. Notably, this is the second trophy won by Portugal in three years after having earlier lifted the European Championship trophy in 2016.

J&K Bank shares plunge 20% after Chairman’s removal

Shares of J&K Bank plunged up to 20% on Monday after its Chairman, Parvez Ahmed, was removed. Veteran actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away in Bengaluru on Monday at the age of 81, after suffering from prolonged illness. A Jnanpith Award winner, Karnad was also a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. He made his acting and screenplay debut in 1970 with the Kannada film ‘Samskara’.

Tamil comedian Crazy Mohan passes away after cardiac arrest at 66

Tamil screenwriter, comedian, and playwright, Crazy Mohan passed away in Chennai on Monday aged 66. He suffered a heart attack on Monday afternoon and was taken to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai, where efforts to revive him failed. The first feature film he worked on was K Balachander’s ‘Poikkal Kudhirai’ for which he wrote the dialogues.

Huawei gets 46 5G contracts from 30 countries despite US ban

Chinese telecom giant Huawei said it has obtained 46 commercial 5G contracts so far in 30 countries and shipped more than one lakh 5G stations globally. This comes despite the US issuing a ban on Huawei’s 5G services, warning that its systems could be manipulated by China for spying. The US further urged nations to shun Huawei in 5G networks.

Ex-Puducherry CM and DMK leader RV Janakiraman passes away

Former Puducherry Chief Minister and DMK leader RV Janakiraman on Monday passed away at the age of 79. He died at a private hospital where he was undergoing treatment for age-related illness. Janakiraman became the Chief Minister in 1996 and represented the Nellithope Assembly constituency for five consecutive times.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) chief Alexandre de Juniac has said Indian airlines are facing very tough competition. The cost environment is also not in their favour, he observed. To tackle this issue, taxes in the aviation sector must be lowered, competition on fuel supply improved and more efforts must be taken on regulating airports, he said.
