BJP-JJP to form government together in Haryana, CM to be from BJP

BJP President Amit Shah on Friday said leaders of BJP and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) have decided the two parties will together form government in Haryana. “The Chief Minister will be from BJP and Deputy Chief Minister will be from JJP,” Shah added. In the assembly polls, BJP won 40 seats, JJP won 10 seats and Congress won 31 seats.

J&K Governor Malik transferred, Lt Governors for J&K and Ladakh appointed

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Goa. Further, Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of J&K, while Radha Krishna Mathur has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. J&K and Ladakh will officially become Union Territories from October 31.

Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun has become the second bowler after Australia’s Peter Siddle in professional cricket history to take a hat-trick on birthday. Mithun, who turned 30 today, achieved the feat after taking Tamil Nadu’s last three wickets in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 final. Mithun also became the first Karnataka bowler to take a hat-trick in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Runner wearing ‘Jesus Saves’ bib saved by man named Jesus after collapsing

Tyler Moon, a 25-year-old runner who was taking part in the Medtronic TC 10 Mile race in US’ Minnesota opted to have ‘Jesus Saves’ on his bib instead of his name. Tyler collapsed during the race and suffered a heart attack. A 43-year-old nurse named Jesus Bueno was running behind him and gave first aid to the runner, including CPR.

Microsoft beats Amazon, wins US’ $10-billion JEDI defence contract

US Department of Defence has awarded Microsoft with the Joint Enterprise Defence Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract worth up to $10 billion over 10 years. The software giant defeated Amazon to provide infrastructure and platform services for both the Pentagon’s business and mission operations. “We’re surprised about this conclusion. [Amazon Web Services] is the clear leader,” Amazon said.

Lee Fixel-backed startup Ally raises $15 mn led by Tiger Global

Seattle-based business execution management startup Ally has raised $15 million in a Series B funding round led by American hedge fund Tiger Global. Existing investors including Accel, Vulcan Capital and Founders Co-op also participated in the funding. Launched by Vetri Vellore, Ally raised $8-million Series A round from former Tiger Global Partner Lee Fixel and Accel, among others in August.

Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday said, “PoK is a terrorist-controlled part of Pakistan.” “The territory has been illegally occupied by Pakistan and is not controlled by the Pakistani establishment, it is controlled by terrorists,” Rawat said. “The complete state of J&K includes PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan. Therefore, PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan become an occupied territory,” he added.

Delhi Metro train services to close early on Diwali

On the occasion of Diwali on Sunday, the last Delhi Metro train service will start at 10 PM from the terminal stations of all the lines. Usually, the last train service starts at 11 PM. Train services will run as usual for rest of the day on Sunday from 6 AM onwards on all lines.

Lee is accused of using three horses to bribe ex-President Park Geun-hye in order to win her support for his succession as Samsung chief. The judge said Samsung should have internal control systems to prevent crimes committed by top executives.

Facebook starts testing dedicated ‘News’ tab in the US

Facebook on Friday announced it has begun testing its dedicated in-app ‘News’ tab with some American users. The tab, which is personalised based on what users read, will let them access curated stories of the day and link their news subscriptions to their Facebook accounts. The users can also hide the articles, topics and publishers they don’t wish to see.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said that the party will play the role of an “efficient” opposition in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. The NCP won 54 seats while its alliance partner INC won 44 seats in the Assembly polls held on October 21. The BJP won 105 seats and its alliance partner Shiv Sena won 56 seats.

Meesho posts 20 times higher loss of ₹100 cr in FY19: Report

Bengaluru-based e-commerce startup Meesho has reported a twenty-fold increase in its loss to ₹100.42 crore in 2018-19 from ₹5 crore in the previous financial year, reports said citing regulatory filings. However, its revenue reportedly grew to ₹84 crore from ₹6 crore in 2017-18. Founded by IIT-Delhi alumni Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal, Meesho is backed by Facebook, Naspers and others.

SoftBank may write down $5 bn amid WeWork, Uber losses: Report

SoftBank Vision Fund is planning to write down at least $5 billion to reflect a fall in the value of its holdings including WeWork and Uber, reported Bloomberg. This follows SoftBank agreeing to a $5-billion rescue financing for WeWork at an $8-billion valuation, lower than its $47-billion valuation in January. SoftBank will reportedly reveal the writedown alongside its second-quarter earnings.

Demand turnaround hard to predict: Maruti Suzuki India

Following an over 39% decline in Maruti Suzuki India’s profit in the second quarter, its Chairman RC Bhargava said that demand turnaround in automobiles would be tough to predict. “I will need a crystal ball to predict a turnaround in sales but unfortunately I don’t have one. There’s hope that it’ll happen in the next few months,” Bhargava said.

Lawyer says J&K Guv abolished Human Rights panel, files plea in SC

A lawyer, Muzaffer Iqbal Khan, has filed an Intervention Application in the Supreme Court, alleging that the Human Rights Commission, the Women’s Commission and the Legislative Council were abolished in Jammu and Kashmir by Governor Satya Pal Malik. Khan asked the court to allow all these institutions to continue until the decision on revocation of Article 370 by Supreme Court.

ED moves SC against Delhi HC order granting bail to Shivakumar

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court order granting bail to Congress leader DK Shivakumar in alleged connection with a money laundering case. The Delhi High Court had granted bail to Shivakumar while taking into note that he had been extensively interrogated by the ED since his arrest in September.

Ex-Miss Iran detained at Philippines airport for a week seeks asylum

Former Miss Iran Bahareh Zare Bahari, who has been detained at the Ninoy Aquino Airport in the Philippines for nearly a week, has sought asylum in the Asian country. Bahari was detained after Iran issued an Interpol red alert for her on assault and battery charges, that she has denied. “They’ll kill me”, Bahari said if she’s deported to Iran.

Jailed former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif granted bail on medical grounds

The Lahore High Court on Friday granted bail to former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, on medical grounds. Sharif has been diagnosed with acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura and will recover in a week’s time, doctors said. Sharif is already serving a seven-year jail term in the Al Azizia Steel Mills corruption case.

Piramal falls most in 7 yrs after announcing ₹5,400 cr capital raise

Piramal Enterprises shares fell as much as 17% on Friday, the biggest drop since 2012, after it announced plans to raise ₹5,400 crore. The company will raise ₹3,650 crore through a rights issue priced at 25% discount to Thursday’s close. Further, Piramal plans to raise ₹1,750 crore through a preferential allotment of compulsorily convertible debentures to Canadian pension fund CDPQ.

Norway wealth fund hits 10 tn crowns, CEO says ‘lucky to discover oil’ The value of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, commonly known as the oil fund, grew to a record 10 trillion Norwegian crowns ($1.09 trillion) on Friday. “We were lucky to discover oil. The return on the investments in global financial markets has been so high that it can be compared to having discovered oil again,” the fund’s CEO Yngve Slyngstad said.
