IRCTC

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the railways. IRCTC’s online ticketing portal, which is the largest e-commerce portal in India, is known for changing the face of railway ticketing in India. It pioneered internet-based rail ticket booking through its website, as well as from the mobile phones via GPRS or SMS.

BOOK MY SHOW

BookMyShow is India’s biggest online movie and events ticketing brand. The website caters to ticket sales for movies, plays, concerts and sporting events via the online platform. Launched in 1999, it is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It also has offices in New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. BookMyShow reaches about 800 to 900 cinemas in 200 cities and towns. BookMyShow is part of Bigtree Entertainment was founded by Ashish Hemrajani, Parikshit Dar and Rajesh Balpande, in 1999.

REDBUS

RedBus is an Indian company into the business of providing bus ticket booking services through its website, iOS and Android mobile apps. redBus has its offices in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Mumbai, Pune, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, and Singapore. In the year 2015, redBus started its operation in the international market with its business opening in Singapore and Malaysia. redBus has innovated the bus ticketing model and stands in a niche that has till date not seen any significant competitor at a similar position.

Indiatimes  is an Internet subsidiary of The Times of India Group. The Times Group has a 100% stake in it. Naaptol is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Naaptol was started by its founder and CEO, an IIT Kanpur alumnus in January 2008 as a product research and price comparison service. In 2009 it adapted the marketplace model and stated selling products online. Naaptol follows the marketplace business model. It has a website, and has also ventured into the m-commerce segment. In the initial stage, Naaptol started with a seed capital of Rs.50 lakhs. In 2010, Naaptol started investing in print media.

QUIKR.COM

ARCHIES ONLINE

Archies Limited is an Indian company based in New Delhi. It was started in 1979 by Anil Moolchandani. Initially it sold song books, posters and leather patches. The company’s main product, greeting cards, was introduced in 1980. Cards were introduced for major Indian festivals such as Holi, Diwali and Rakhi, apart from the usual New Year, birthday and anniversary occasions. The company went public in 1995. FLIPKART

Flipkart is an e-commerce company founded in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. The company is registered in Singapore, but has its headquarters in Bangalore, Karnataka. Flipkart has launched its own product range under the name “DigiFlip” with products including tablets, USBs, and laptop bags. In May 2014, Flipkart received $210 million from DST Global; in July 2014 it raised $1 billion led by existing investors Tiger Global and South Africa’s media group Naspers; and in May 2015 it raised $550 million from some of its existing investors. Flipkart’s last fundraising round in May 2015 had pegged its valuation at $15 billion.

MYNTRA

Myntra is an Indian e-commerce company of fashion and casual lifestyle products, headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. The company was founded in 2007 by IIT graduates Mukesh Bansal, Ashutosh Lawania and Vineet Saxena with a focus on personalisation of gift items. By 2010, Myntra shifted its focus to the online retailing of branded apparel. In May 2014, Myntra.com merged with Flipkart to compete against Jabong, Amazon and other established offline retailers like Future Group, Aditya Birla Group and Reliance Retail.

NAUKRI

Naukri.com is an Indian job portal operating in India founded in March 1997. Naukri.com is the brain child of Sanjeev Bikhchandani, operating under the company, Info Edge (India). Info Edge is a listed company on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India. It went public in November 2006. Naukri.com has a database of close to 50 million registered job seekers and has an average of about 11,000 resumes being added daily while about 130,000 resumes are modified daily.

SNAPDEAL

In February 2010, Kunal Bahl along with Rohit Bansal, started Snapdeal.com, one of India’s largest online marketplaces, with the widest assortment of 12 million+ products across 500+ diverse categories from thousands of regional, national, and international brands and retailers. With millions of users and 150,000 sellers, Snapdeal is the shopping destination for internet users across the country, delivering to 5000+ cities and towns in India. With its acquisition of Freecharge in 2015, a leading mobile transactions platform, Snapdeal has become one of the largest mCommerce companies in the country

CRICBUZZ.COM

CricBuzz is a sports news website exclusively for the game of cricket. The site features news, articles, live coverage of cricket matches, player rankings and team rankings. The website also offers several mobile app. CricBuzz is also the largest mobile app for cricket news and scores in India. CricBuzz was created by three Infosys former employees Piyush Agrawal (IIT, BHU alumnus), Pankaj Chhaparwal and Pravin Hegde in the year 2004.

OLX

OLX, Inc. was founded in 2006. OLX, Inc. operates an online classifieds site, competing with the likes of portals like Quikr. OLX enables users to design ads with pictures and videos; control their selling, buying, and community activity; display their ads on the social networking profile; and access the site from their mobile phone. One of the key innovations of OLX was its recognition of the vastness of India and its languages in their attempt to regionalise their offerings. Resultingly, OLX accounts can be viewed by users in their local language.

REDIFF.COM

Rediff.com is an Indian news, information, entertainment and shopping web portal, founded in 1996 as “Rediff On The NeT”. It is headquartered in Mumbai, with offices in Bangalore, New Delhi and New York City. According to Alexa rankings, Rediff is the No. 17 Indian web portal; 89.1% of the millions of visitors to Rediff.com are from India, while the rest come primarily from the USA (3.4%) and China. Interestingly, Rediff.com was the first website domain name registered in India in 1996.

Launched in August 2006, Yatra.com is today ranked as the leading provider of consumer-direct travel services in India. JUSTDIAL

Justdial is an Indian company providing pan-India search services via the Phone, Web, Mobile and SMS. It is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The service represents a large classifieds service where users can call a common number to request a human operator what products or services they are looking for. The available, listed businesses are then communicated to the users by Email or SMS. Justdial was founded by VSS Mani who serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company. Mani thought of the idea while working for Yellow Pages Company called United Database India (UDI) in 1987.

HIKE MESSENGER

Hike Messenger is a cross-platform instant messaging service for smartphones that uses the internet for communication. In addition to text messaging, users can send each other graphical stickers, emoticons, images, videos, audios, files, voice messages, contacts and user location. Hike was launched on 12 December 2012 and raised its first round of funding of $7 million from Bharti and  SoftBank in April 2013. Apart from basic social messaging including photos, videos and audio files, Hike allows users to “nudge”, a feature used to ping the receiver.

YEPME

Launched in August 2011, Yepme is India’s biggest online fashion brand, which services over 1000 cities monthly as against most offline retail fashion brands, which service only 75 cities. Yepme now delivers close to 500,000 units to its customers every month. Yepme’s mission is to democratize fashion in India. The brand targets style conscious men & women between the ages of 20-29 years, in India. The target segment has a high level of fashion awareness through TV, Internet and Movies and wants Fresh Fashion every day. Yepme has a fan following of over 5 million on Facebook.

YEBHI.COM

Yebhi.com is an Indian online shopping e-commerce portal for Home, Lifestyle & Fashion e-retailer, launched in the year 2009. Yebhi, which began as BigShoeBazaar.com, has a registered user base of about 1.5 million people, of whom about half a million have transacted on the site. Nexus Venture Partners and N. R. Narayana Murthy’s Catamaran Ventures invested Rs. 40 crore in Yebhi.com in mid-2011. Fidelity Growth Partners and Qualcomm are also investors in this leading shopping portal.

WYNK (BHARTI AIRTEL)

Bharti Airtel has launched a new music streaming service with an OTT app that is carrier agnostic. Called Wynk Music, it is currently only available for Android and iOS, and offers an ‘expert curated’ library of 1.7 million regional and International songs across 8 languages (English, Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali). Competing directly with Gaana and Saavn, Airtel’s free Wynk Music app is also ad-free. Two subscriptions are available- Wynk Plus and Wynk Freedom.

ALIVE (TIMES GROUP NEWS APP)

Alive is a venture of Times Internet. It has applications and services to users in diverse categories. The Alive app includes  mobile augmented reality software by Times Internet. Alive introduced OneScan, a new way to search not by keywords, text or voice but visually. So, now people can use phone camera to click/ scan any product, logo image or newspaper ad and let the app discover for them similar items; subsequently, customers have the option to buy the selected items online.

ZOMATO

Zomato is a restaurant search and discovery service founded in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah. It currently operates in 23 countries, including India, Australia and the United States. It features restaurant information such as scanned menus and photos sourced by local street teams, as well as user reviews and ratings. The company also provides cashless payment, online ordering, white-label apps, table reservation, and point-of-sale systems.

PAYTM

Paytm is India’s largest mobile commerce platform. Paytm started by offering mobile recharge and utility bill payments and today it offers a full marketplace to consumers on its mobile apps. Paytm has over 100mn registered users. In a short span of time Paytm has scaled to more than 60 million orders per month. Paytm is the consumer brand of India’s leading mobile internet company One97 Communications. One97 investors include Ant Financial (AliPay), SAIF Partners, Sapphire Venture and Silicon Valley Bank.

POLICYBAZAAR

PolicyBazaar is an online insurance comparison portal offering both life insurance and general insurance products. It helps consumers take an informed choice regarding their insurance needs and make comparison an important intervention in their path to purchase insurance. It offers services both on mobile and the web through which customers can look for insurance products, compare the various options, buy the best option, and save money by buying the cheapest option after comparing.

BHARATMATRIMONY

BharatMatrimony is an online matrimony service and a part of Matrimony.com. It was founded in 1997 by Murugavel Janakiraman, who later met his wife through his own matrimony site. The company has 130 offices in India, with offices in Dubai, Sri Lanka, United States and Malaysia to cater to its customers beyond India. Murugavel Janakiraman started the BharatMatrimony website in 2000 while working as a software consultant for Lucent Technologies in Edison, N.J. In the late 1990s he set up a Tamil community web portal, which included matrimonial ads.

BANKBAZAAR

BankBazaar is an online marketplace that gives consumers access to customized rate quotes on loans, credit cards or personal finance products such as insurance policies, bank loans and credit card offers. They offer their services through web and mobile platforms, through which consumers can search for offers, compare, and customize it. In 2008, with an initial capital of Rs. 45 lakh, the name was chosen as it signifies a choice and comparison of banks. The founders Adhil Shetty, Arjun Shetty and Rati are a group of U.S. returned entrepreneurs who had worked in companies like Deloitte, Amazon.com, Capital One and Microsoft.

COVERFOX

Founded by Varun and Devendra Rane, both professionals from the insurance and tech industries, Coverfox aims to push the envelope for both these sectors. Firstly, more Indians will be buying insurance and secondly, a large segment is now looking online. Coverfox managed to get an IRDA Direct Broker licence in early 2014 and it has been almost 18 months since it started functioning operationally. In this period, it raised a Series round of US$2 million and followed it with a US$12 million Series B round in April, 2015 from Accel Partners and SAIF Partners.
