Gulaab Gang

The week’s second women-centric film, Gulaab Gang, isn’t quite as impressive as it should have been, given the fact that the cast is headed by Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Juhi Chawla.

Debutant director Soumik Sen (also the film’s writer and music composer) adopts the conventions of a Bollywood potboiler to tell a purportedly socially conscious tale of a band of female vigilantes in the Hindi heartland who go all out to fight injustice.

The antagonist in the plot is a woman politician (Juhi Chawla), who is as ruthless as they come. The gang in pink takes on her men in a bitter battle for control of a remote village.

Madhuri takes on the role of an ‘action hero’ capable of the most baffling stunts, including bouncing off the side of a truck, as she takes a bunch of thugs to task.

Gulaab Gang has much going for it. Sadly, not all of it goes all the way.
