England defeated Afghanistan by 150 runs today to go top of 2019 World Cup points table with four victories in five matches. The victory was England’s third biggest in World Cup history, while Afghanistan have now lost each of their first five 2019 World Cup matches. Afghanistan are the only team without a victory in 2019 World Cup so far.

BCCI turns down Afghanistan’s request to host APL in India

The BCCI has turned down Afghanistan Cricket Board’s request to host its T20 league in India. “It wouldn’t be appropriate to consider hosting Afghanistan Premier League (APL) in India as we have our own league (IPL),” an official said. The ACB officials had conveyed their request to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and GM Cricket Operations Saba Karim on May 16.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain mocked himself after a fan compared Eoin Morgan’s record for most sixes in an ODI innings with his career sixes’ record. “Eoin Morgan 17 sixes today. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has formally written to the BCCI seeking the board’s permission to play in T20 leagues around the world. This comes after the all-rounder announced his retirement from international cricket on June 10. Notably, the BCCI doesn’t allow an active cricketer to take part in overseas T20 leagues.

A photo showing sled dogs wading through water ankle-deep on top of a melting ice sheet in Greenland has gone viral. The picture taken by Steffen Olsen from the Centre for Ocean and Ice at the Danish Meteorological Institute shows the scale of melting ice in Greenland. Olsen said the ice sheet beneath the water was 1.2 metres thick.

BJP MP claims ‘mushrooming’ of mosques in Delhi, writes to L-G

West Delhi BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma has claimed that several parts of the city have seen a “mushrooming” of mosques on government land and roads which “hamper” traffic flow and cause “inconvenience”. He wrote to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal seeking “immediate action”. Verma suggested forming a multi-agency committee, including civic bodies and police, to look into the matter.

NIFT fires 56 housekeepers who accused staffer of sexual harassment

NIFT Hyderabad has fired 56 female housekeepers and sought new replacements from the agency they belong to. The housekeeping staff supervisor lodged a police complaint against Srinivas Reddy, a senior employee, last October for sexually harassing housekeeping employees. “The director general of NIFT is a woman… Wouldn’t she at least ensure that we get justice?” she asked.

Unemployed graduates to get up to ₹3,500 allowance in Rajasthan

Unemployed youth having graduation or equivalent degree will be given unemployment allowance by Rajasthan government. Male applicants will get ₹3,000/month, while the women and differently-abled will get ₹3,500/month under Chief Minister Yuva Sambal Yojana from February this year. The applicants must be natives of Rajasthan and the amount will be given for two years or until they get employed.

2 dead, 6 injured as raft capsizes in J&K’s Pahalgam

Two persons, including a tourism department employee, died and at least six others were injured on Tuesday when a raft capsized in Lidder river in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The incident took place during a rafting championship held as a tribute to Rauf Ahmad Dar, a local guide who died last month while rescuing five tourists in the same river.

Google Calendar experienced a service outage, wherein affected users were unable to access the service, about an hour after G Suite tweeted a video promoting it. The service reportedly went down majorly in regions including the US, UK and Europe. “We expect to resolve…issue impacting a majority of Google Calendar users today at 10:40 am PT,” Google tweeted.

34 Pakistani migrants given Indian citizenship in Rajasthan

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Rajeeva Swarup on Tuesday said the Rajasthan government has granted Indian citizenship to 34 Pakistani migrants living in the state for more than a decade. The migrants include 19 from Barmer, 10 from Pali and five from Jalore district. A total of 79 Pakistani migrants have been given Indian citizenship since January this year, Swarup added.

Tata’s Trent to raise up to ₹1,550 crore for expansion plans

Tata Group’s retail arm Trent on Tuesday announced plans to raise up to ₹1,550 crore in FY20 to fund its expansion. It’ll raise ₹950 crore from issuance of shares to its promoter Tata Sons on a preferential basis. The company’s board has further appointed a committee to explore options including qualified institutional placement and rights issue to raise ₹600 crore.

Domestic air traffic grows 3% in May after slump in April

India’s domestic air passenger traffic grew 3% year-on-year in May, after registering a slump in April amid the grounding of Jet Airways, aviation regulator DGCA revealed. Domestic carriers carried a total of 1.22 crore passengers in May compared to 1.19 crore passengers a year ago. IndiGo clocked in a 49% market share during the month by carrying 59.8 lakh passengers.

ONGC to auction over 60 fields to private operators: Reports

State-run ONGC will shortly auction over 60 small and marginal fields to private companies under the production enhancement contracts (PEC) mechanism, reports said. Under PEC, private firms invest and introduce comprehensive technologies to improve production, while the ownership of the fields rests with ONGC. The small and marginal fields are said to contribute only 5% to ONGC’s total production.
