Police beat me up, urinated in mouth: Journo covering train accident

A local reporter covering the derailment of a train in Uttar Pradesh was thrashed by Government Railway Police on Tuesday, a video showed. The reporter claimed police locked him up, stripped him and urinated in his mouth, adding that he was assaulted for covering story that “exposed corruption in the GRP forces”. Two policemen have been suspended following the incident.

Shahid Kapoor, when asked if he was invited to the wedding of his ex-girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan on ‘BFFs with Vogue’, said, “I don’t remember…I don’t think I was invited.” Kareena and Saif got married in 2012. Rishabh Pant to fly to England as cover for injured Shikhar Dhawan

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is being flown to England by the BCCI as cover for injured Shikhar Dhawan at the request of the team management. This comes after the BCCI said Dhawan will remain under observation in England after injuring his thumb against Australia. Pant won’t be considered as replacement till team management takes a final call on Dhawan’s availability.

CBI raids rape accused ex-UP Minister’s home over illegal mining

CBI on Wednesday carried out raids in the residence and office of former Mining Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Gayatri Prajapati in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi in connection with the illegal mining scam. Prajapati is lodged in jail since March 2017 on charges of gangraping a woman. A total of 22 places in UP and Delhi were raided by the agency.

IMA Jewels owner accuses Cong MLA of cheating him of ₹400 cr

Missing IMA Jewels owner Mohammed Mansoor Khan alleged in an audio clip that Congress MLA Roshan Baig took ₹400 crore from him to contest general election but failed to return. Khan said he was ending his life as he was “tired of bribing corrupt politicians and bureaucrats”. Baig, however, said he was not associated with IMA in any way.

Haryana farmer loses ₹1.3 crore from bank account in 10 days

A 65-year-old farmer from Haryana has claimed he lost over ₹1.3 crore from his bank account in a span of 10 days in April. Leela Ram from Mohammadpur Jharsa village had received the money from the state government in exchange for land acquired for a road construction project. The police have filed a case in this regard.

Man involved in Gauri Lankesh’s murder held for Pansare’s killing

Right-wing activist Sharad Kalaskar was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of veteran Communist leader Govind Pansare. Kalaskar, who had stayed in Kolhapur for over a week before Pansare’s murder, was allegedly also among the two shooters who gunned down rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in 2013. He is also an accused in the 2017 murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh.

Police couldn’t verify alibi of man acquitted in Kathua case: Court

The prosecution’s failure to verify accused Vishal Jangotra’s alibi during the probe in the Kathua rape case led to his acquittal, the special court stated. It raised the issue of the prosecution failing to question Inspector Kewal Kishore, who did most of the investigation regarding Vishal’s alleged role. Six other men were convicted in the gangrape and murder case.

Kargil war veteran and retired Honorary Lieutenant Mohammed Sanaullah, who was declared an ‘illegal foreigner’ in Assam, said, “Entering through the prison gate, I cried and cried.” “I asked myself what sin have I committed that after serving my motherland for three decades…I’m being detained like a foreigner,” he added. The 52-year-old was granted bail last week.

National Film Archive of India screens Karnad’s films post his demise

National Film Archive of India (NFAI) will honour late actor-playwright Girish Karnad by screening some of his critically acclaimed films through the week. Karnad’s Kannada film ‘Ondanondu Kaladalli’ was screened on Tuesday, one day after his demise. His films ‘Kanooru Heggadithi’, ‘Kaadu’ as well as his Marathi film ‘Umbartha’, will be screened on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Samoa bans Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’ over gay scenes

The Pacific nation of Samoa banned the film ‘Rocketman’, a biopic based on the life of British singer Elton John, because of its depiction of homosexuality. The film was banned last week as it clashed with Samoa’s “culture” and “Christian beliefs”, Samoa’s principal censor Leiataua Niuapu Faaui said. A Russian distributor earlier censored scenes depicting gay sex in the film.

Oscar dates shifted in 2021, 2022 over Olympics, Super Bowl

The Oscars will take place in late February in 2021 and 2022 to accommodate the Olympics, the US National Football League’s Super Bowl, and various national holidays. The Oscars award ceremony will be held on February 28 in 2021 and February 27 in 2022. The event’s organisers also announced that the Oscars will take place on February 9, next year.

PM Modi’s radio programme Mann Ki Baat to resume on June 30

PM Narendra Modi’s radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ will resume on June 30 after it was discontinued during the Lok Sabha elections in which he was a candidate. “Your stories, ideas and suggestions can be a part of this month’s episode,” MyGovIndia said in a tweet. After the death of 8 workers in recent clashes between BJP and TMC, another BJP worker was allegedly found murdered and his body burnt in West Bengal’s Malda. Gujarat on high alert as Cyclone Vayu likely to hit state on June 13

The Gujarat administration is on high alert to deal with Cyclone Vayu, which is likely to hit the state on Thursday, officials said. Vayu is expected to touch Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva as a ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ with wind speed 140-150 kmph in the morning.
