He nostalgically remembers that when he passed out of IIPM in 1993, he just had a degree with him. An amalgamation of good faculty members and an interactive & application based style of teaching has contributed in a great way to his personality and made him a confident individual. Each class at the institute was a new learning experience and that base helped him move ahead in the corporate world in a much better way. Girish got campus placement with the DCM group in New Delhi. There was just one single vacancy at DCM at that time. The company was searching for a commerce graduate & he even had a postgraduate degree in finance, so he proved to be an ideal fit for the job. But the fact is that when you step into an organisation, you are expected to know a lot of things. He frankly admits that he was a novice, and his lack of awareness about the functioning of the organisation proved to be an impediment in his initial days, and he had to move up the hard way in life. As a young management professional, he had very little industry experience, he joined DCM as a management trainee and worked with them for about two years.
After gaining valuable industry experience at DCM, he moved on to Tata Finance. At Tata Finance, he joined as a junior executive, but he had to perform important and mission critical functions like setting up the business, developing it & recruiting people. He worked at their regional office in Calcutta. Within a year, he was moved to their Orissa office. Success knocked soon at his door, and he was made the 5th Branch Manager within two years at Tata Finance. His portfolio was revamped & he was made responsible for the entire branch. He also worked in the North East region for about three years.
Smart career moves at the right time made a world of difference to Girish’s progression up the ladder. Aft er gaining enriching experience, he joined ICICI Bank and worked with them for about 5 years in the capacity of All India Head – Mumbai, wherein he was mainly responsible for product development. Patnaik is currently based at Mumbai and is Head – Collections at HDFC bank. Th e three core principles that he has religiously followed for his successful career progression are: Be loyal to your profession; Be loyal to your organisation; Be loyal to your Boss.
He firmly believes that during the initial stages of one’s career one should concentrate more on assignments that help in better understanding of his/her field rather than monetary issues. He thinks that this generation is very impatient and should rather focus on quality projects to gain a firm footing footing in their respective fields. He remembers asking Prof. N. C. Shukla whether he should opt for DCM. Prof. Shukla reassuringly told Girish to take up the job with DCM to gain more industry experience. And that’s a decision he never had to regret.
