After completing his post graduation in 1994 with specialisation in marketing and finance at IIPM, Chatterji joined Gontermann-Peipers India Ltd. He was a part of the marketing domain at Gontermann. His primary responsibilities were to generate new export territories and also to revive blacklisted customers. Being an engineering set up, Gontermann typically had a lot of engineers in its workforce. Mr. Chatterji was one of the very few MBAs who was hired. From working on policy manuals to marketing strategies, Tuhin did it all. He was instrumental in setting up a green field project for Induction Hardened Forged Rolls for the first time in the country. While his stint at Gontermann was fairly long, Tuhin feels that to be successful, one should not hesitate in exploring opportunities and also making the best of them. In order to move successfully in one’s career, one should not ignore the learning curve, according to Tuhin. Every step on the way will involve learning. He clearly remembers the learnings that he got, when he was working with his first boss and he also emphasises the importance of learning from diverse situations. After leaving Gontermann in 2006, he joined CII and is currently the deputy director. He is working closely with sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, chemicals. EPC in order to ensure their overall competitiveness is enhanced. Being at CII has also helped Tuhin realise his dreams of seeing the world. He proudly admits that he has traveled all the four continents.
Although, Tuhin has achieved so much in his career, has not forgotten his first step towards success – his IIPM days, the source of very sweet memories. He says that he owes his entire perspective to IIPM. He also points out how it was a pleasure to learn from IIPM’s excellent faculty and also experience its industry interface. Being at IIPM made him realise the diversity of cultures India has. He remembers his batch, which had people from all corners of the country, and this really fascinated him.
For the upcoming brigade of young professionals, Tuhin advises that one should choose his/her first job wisely and always keep in mind that the learning curve moves on in a structured manner. At work, Mr. Chatterji is a very democratic leader and believes in active participation of employees across levels in the daily decision making process. He looks up to leaders like Jack Welch and Dhirubhai Ambani as his source of inspiration. He really admires the leadership skills exhibited by both of them.
When not working, he spends quality time with his 10 year old son and his wife. He really loves traveling with them and is an adventurous foodie a well. During his many travels, he never misses an opportunity to try a new food item. An avid learner, Tuhin sums up his story of success in this simple yet profound statement, “it is important to keep your head in the air but it is equally important to keep one’s feet on the ground”.
