No facility to vote for people like us away from home: Rishi Kapoor

Actor Rishi Kapoor, who is currently undergoing treatment in US, took to Twitter to reveal he inquired from Indian Consulate’s office in New York if there was any facility for Indians “away from home” to vote. He added the consulate informed him it wasn’t possible. “Please don’t forget to vote wherever and whenever you have to,” he urged Indian citizens.

Rush at ‘Endgame’ screening in Bengaluru, woman gets stitches

A 32-year-old woman was injured due to rush at ‘Avengers: Endgame’ screening at Cinepolis Forum Shantiniketan in Whitefield in Bengaluru on Saturday night. Injured above her lip, the woman had to get stitches after she fell down while entering the movie hall. Her friend claimed the theatre doors opened just three minutes before the film’s timing, leading to a rush.

PM Modi got at least 5 income tax refunds in last 18 years, Rahul 6

PM Narendra Modi received income tax refunds at least five times in the last 18 years, whereas Congress President Rahul Gandhi received six refunds, as per Income Tax Department. The refunds for assessment years 2015-16 and 2012-13 got “adjusted against outstanding demand” in case of PM Modi. This was the case for Rahul in the assessment year 2011-2012.

KKR score 232/2 against MI, record highest total of IPL 2019

Kolkata Knight Riders put up a total of 232/2 against Mumbai Indians on Sunday to record the highest total of IPL 2019 so far and their second highest total in IPL. This was overall the tenth and Kolkata Knight Riders’ fourth 200-plus total of the season. Further, it was the seventh highest total in IPL history.

KKR all-rounder Andre Russell has become the second player after KXIP opener Chris Gayle to smash 50 sixes in an IPL season. Russell, who scored an unbeaten 80 off 40 balls including six fours and eight sixes against Mumbai Indians, has smashed 50 sixes in IPL 2019. Gayle has achieved the feat twice (59 in 2012 and 51 in 2013).

After Jet Airways, Pawan Hans fails to pay April salaries to staff

State-run helicopter service provider Pawan Hans has told employees it cannot disburse salaries for April due to “uncomfortable financial position”. “The industry’s future is uncertain as many of our established businesses and associated challenges are threatening future deployments,” it added. This comes amid the crisis at Jet Airways, which deferred salaries to employees on multiple occasions.

Peon on election duty dies of heart attack in Maharashtra

A 54-year-old peon on election duty in Maharashtra’s Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency, which goes to polls on Monday, died of a heart attack on Sunday, police said. The police added that he suffered the attack after he reached the polling booth and died on his way to a hospital. A total of 17 Maharashtra constituencies will vote on April 29.

Over 15,000 fake ‘miracle’ product-selling subdomains removed

GoDaddy and security research firm Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 have taken down over 15,000 subdomains dedicated to selling miracle products like weight-loss cures under false pretences, after a two-year investigation. In some cases, users were sent emails leading to fake advertisements showing celebrities like Gwen Stefani allegedly backing the product. Compromised subdomains were shut in March.

Shiv Sena appoints Priyanka Chaturvedi as party ‘Upneta’

The Shiv Sena has appointed former Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi as party’s ‘Upneta’ (deputy leader). Chaturvedi thanked Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for the position on Twitter and said that she will fulfil her duties to the best of her abilities. Priyanka left the Congress on April 19 after 10-year service, stating that the party ignored the misbehaviour against her.

PayPal invests $500 million in ride-hailing app Uber

American online payments platform PayPal has agreed to invest $500 million in Uber through a private placement of shares. “I am thrilled to announce that we’ve reached an agreement…and intend to explore future commercial payment collaborations, including the development of Uber’s digital wallet,” PayPal’s CEO Dan Schulman said. As per SEC filings, the deal is subject to some closing conditions.

Svalbard reindeer eating seaweed over climate change: Study

Svalbard Reindeer, claimed to be the northernmost reindeer population on Earth, are being forced to eat seaweed due to climate change, researchers said. They observed that during a bad winter when natural fodder was covered with ice, one-third of the reindeer they saw were feeding at the shore. They analysed stable isotopes in reindeer poop, which confirmed the finding.

GDP growth may top 7% in FY20: CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian

Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Krishnamurthy Subramanian has said India’s GDP is likely to be over 7% in 2019-20. He attributed the slowdown over last two quarters of FY19 to structural factors as well as “something that’s a hangover of what has happened earlier.” The CEA added the government would stick to fiscal deficit target of 3.4% of GDP for 2019-20.

Air India offers engines as collateral for new ones: Report

Air India has reportedly offered three new-generation engines that power its Airbus A320neo fleet as collateral to lenders for financing the purchase of five engines. The national carrier is yet to receive one of the engines being offered as collateral, the report added. This comes after the ₹2,000-crore sovereign guarantee provided by the government to the carrier ended last year.

UAE suspends and recalls sex drug ‘Musli Power X-Tra’

The UAE government has suspended and recalled a drug called ‘Musli Power X-Tra’, a sexual enhancement product for men. It alleged the capsules contained a solid brown mass instead of a powder as specified on the product. The drug’s shelf life registered with the UAE government is 24 months while duration mentioned on the product is 36 months, it added.

A Dubai-based Indian man named Abhinav Chari, who witnessed the 2008 Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks, narrowly escaped the April 21 Sri Lanka blasts with his wife Navroop K Chari. The couple were staying at Sri Lanka’s Cinnamon Grand Colombo hotel where a bomb had gone off. The couple were not in the hotel when the blast took place.

UAE gives birth certificate to girl born to Hindu dad, Muslim mom

In probably a first, the UAE issued birth certificate to a girl born to a Hindu father and a Muslim mother. As per their marriage rules for expatriates, a Muslim man can marry a non-Muslim woman but a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man. The UAE declared 2019 as ‘Year of Tolerance’ to highlight itself as a tolerant nation.

BJP denies ticket to Parrikar’s son for Goa’s Panaji bypolls Goa BJP has denied ticket to late CM Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar for the Panaji Assembly seat bypolls and has instead fielded former MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker from the seat. The bypolls were necessitated following the death of Parrikar who was the sitting MLA from Panaji. Kuncalienker will contest bypolls against Congress’ Atanasio Monserrate and Aam Aadmi Party’s Valmiki Naik.
